$125,000 In Bad Checks Recovered

The tracking down of bad checks netted more than $49,000 last month in bad checks, according to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor.

More than $125,000 has been recovered for area store owners in the first quarter of 1997, said Prosecutor David Kolbe. The bad check collections last year averaged only $20,000 per month, Kolbe said in his press conference Tuesday.

Last year's total of $240,000 in bad checks collection could be eclipsed this year, Kolbe indicated. He also said the staffer in charge of bad checks has already collected $14,000 in fees for the service.

The fees for reclaiming a bad check range from $0-$20 per check. If the collection rate continues on this course the staffer would provide her own $22,000 salary before the end of the year.
