At approximately 12:40 a.m. Saturday, the Warsaw Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at 139 E. Baker St. Upon arrival, officers found a 20-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the back, according to a news release from WPD. Evidence suggested the shot was at point-blank range.
The victim was cared for by Lutheran EMS and Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory personnel. The victim was initially driven to Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital to be stabilized before being flown to Lutheran in Fort Wayne, according to the release. As of Saturday afternoon, his status was listed in critical but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
Several subjects were on scene and initially detained during the investigation. One person was taken into custody in the rear of the residence and later determined to be the alleged shooter, the release states.
Initial reports were that a physical fight broke out in the front yard of 139 E. Baker St. when several subjects arrived at the residence. During the fight, a firearm was discharged. That weapon had been placed into a vehicle at the residence. The weapon, along with the vehicle, were seized as evidence in this case.
Michael Raul Ramirez, 18, of 540 E. Main St., Warsaw, was interviewed and arrested preliminarily for criminal recklessness with a weapon, pointing a firearm and battery with a deadly weapon, all felony charges.
During the investigation, officers observed an injury to Ramirez’s head. Further investigation revealed this was done during the initial fight and believed to have been done with the use of brass knuckles, the release states. Officers used a ladder, and in searching the roof of the residence, found a set of brass knuckles, also taken into custody as evidence. As a result of this, Alonso Miguel Contreras, 21, of 3700 Shawnee Drive, was arrested for a felony charge of battery causing moderate bodily injury.
