With the sale of Kosciusko Community Hospital officially closed, local investors and patrons have a growing interest in the health of Quorum Health Group Inc. Quorum, the company that purchased KCH, is based in Brentwood, Tenn.One of the largest health care corporations in the country, Quorum operates Lutheran and St.Joseph hospitals in Fort Wayne.Nationwide, Quorum owns 21 hospitals and manages 241 others. In 1998, the company faced two legal actions. According to a November filing by Quorum with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the U.S.Justice Department launched an investigation into Quorum's alleged violations of Medicare law. The Justice Department investigation, initiated in May, is concerned with the preparation of cost reports for Medicare and other government payment programs between 1984 and 1997.The allegations are that Quorum overstated Medicare costs during the years under investigation.

More than $22 billion dollars in federal money is being diverted to "homeland security" and $2 billion of that amount will come from the Housing and Urban Development budget. Locally, said Warsaw Housing Authority director Pam Kennedy, the HUD cuts mean a $75,505 reduction in rental vouchers to the agency's 175 clients. "HUD's rules and regulations date back to the 1930's," Kennedy said to WHA's board of commissioners Monday."The government took a look at the antiquated program and are taking steps to modernize it." WHA provided the number of clients it served in August 2003 - 169.Funding is now based on that figure for the 2005 budget.Instead of WHA providing a budget to HUD one has been given to them showing $687,950.64 in funds beginning Nov.1 instead of the anticipated $763,455 to serve WHA's current number of clients - 175.

As the clock closes in on midnight, Connie Haney of the Warsaw Post Office accepts Dan Fluke's tax return while Phil Anders (L) is only one step behind him at the copy machine. Both were able to secure that all-important April 15 postmark. John Rupe, Warsaw Postmaster, estimated the post office received 4,000 returns between 5 p.m. amd midnight this year, substantially higher than recent years.
