Grace Roundup: Lady Lancers Pick Up Crucial Sweep Of Foresters

The week for Grace's softball team ended on a high note as the Lady Lancers swept Huntington. Grace had balanced production in every area of the game, beating the Foresters 6-4 and 10-2 on the road. With the victories, the Lady Lancers (17-16, 10-8 Crossroads League) move one game out of third place in the league standings. A strong first inning propelled Grace in the opener. The Lady Lancers kicked off the doubleheader with five runs in the first inning.

Warsaw Falls Three Points Short Of Regional Title In Thriller

Two of the top fifteen volleyball teams in the state met at Twin Lakes High School Saturday night, as Crown Point and Warsaw battled for a 4A regional title. The match was exhilarating and tight throughout. The two teams traded sets and needed the maximum of five, with the Lady Bulldogs emerging victorious and moving to the semi-state round with a 3-2 win.

Tiger Wrestlers Place Third In Charger Invitational

Warsaw varsity wrestlers took third place in a field of eight teams in the Charger Invitational at Elkhart Memorial.The event was set up in an unusual round-robin scoring system with team results and individual results being combined to determine individual scores and finishing positions. Jimtown won the team championship by a wide margin with 436 points and five individual champs.Elkhart Memorial finished in second place with 377 points and only two champs.Ê Warsaw followed close behind in third place with 364 points, but four Tigers earned championships. Warsaw's individual champions were Anthony Boley (103), Isaac Perry (160), Kris Hueber (215) and Joey Navarro (275). Coach Tony Boley was ecstatic over the work done by his wrestlers.

Starkweather Shoots Whitko Past Central Noble In Opener

SOUTH WHITLEY - Brieann Starkweather, one of the eight sophomores on Whitko's basketball team, scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as Whitko beat Central Noble 54-33 on Thursday. It was Whitko's first game of the season. After leading 24-18 at halftime, Whitko outscored Central Noble 21-6 in the third quarter to take a commanding 45-24 lead. Whitko outrebounded Central Noble (0-3) 47-30.Starkweather scored her 19 on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor. "She came off the bench for us and did a nice job," Whitko coach Ray Davis said."We weren't even sure she was going to be able to play because she has had a problem with her knee.She was just given clearance to play Monday." Kelly Osborn, another sophomore, turned in a solid game for the Wildcats.She paced the team with five assists and five steals and also had four points and four rebounds.Melissa Sands scored 13 for the Wildcats.

Tigers Win Sectional Opener

On a night two losing streaks became a thing of the past, fans of Warsaw Community High School's football team got a glimpse of the future. With a 28-21 win over visiting Carroll Friday in the first round of Class 5A Sectional 3 action, the Tigers halted their eight-game losing streak and picked up their first postseason win since 2002. The seven-point win was highlighted by a 69-yard touchdown run from freshman running back Andy Conrad and a 45-yard touchdown catch by freshman tight end/quarterback Justin Clemens.

NorthWood Faces West Noble In Quest For Return To State

NorthWood High School is known around the state for its quality football team.When the Panthers face West Noble tonight in Ligonier, the Chargers will try to knock last year's state runners-up out of this year's race. But West Noble coach Monty Mawhorter knows the Chargers will have their work cut out for them.The Chargers, who average 25.3 points per game will be facing a strong 'Black Crunch' defense that gives up an average of just under 14 points per game.And the West Noble squad will have to contend with NorthWood quarterback Charlie Roeder. Roeder, who leads the Panthers in rushing and passing, is a force to be reckoned with.He averages 76 yards rushing and 176 yards passing per game.He is one of the top quarterbacks in the state and is a candidate for this year's Mr.Football.

Grace Men's Basketball Hopes To Improve Upon Last Year's Record

WINONA LAKE -ÊFollowing a 7-26 season, this year's men's basketball team will look toward eight returning players and nine newcomers to provide improvement from last year.Seven of the Lancers' top nine players, in terms of minutes, are back.So are last year's top three scorers and rebounders. Even with all the returning players, there are no seniors on this year's squad.However, four juniors return and a junior transfer was added. Ben Tonagel was one of three players to score 12.4 points per game.He also led the team in free-throw shooting and averaged four rebounds a game.He does a bit of everything.
