Whitko Stops Manchester

SOUTH WHITLEY - Friday night's Whitko versus Manchester game was a game full of story lines. First, there was the return of two people to the field.Whitko head coach Bryan Sprunger returned to the sidelines after a one-game absence because of the death of his mother. On the other side, the Squires finally got their starting quarterback, Rex Reimer, on the field after a suspension that forced him to miss the opening two games of the season. For both returners, it was success of a sort.Sprunger's team picked up the 27-12 win even though he wasn't exuberant over the play of his team.Reimer looked sharp in the first half completing 7 of 9 passes for 93 yards and looked confident leading the Manchester offense. However, in the second half, he was just 3 for 13.

Evolution Of Entertainment A Risk

It has been quite interesting for me over the years watching the evolution of how we Americans entertain ourselves. We keep raising the bar.It takes more and more to get us excited. When I was a kid, we had three channels on television and a deck of cards to entertain ourselves. No cable. No satellite TV.No video rentals. No video games. No home computer. No Internet.Very few extracurricular activities after school. Frankly, there was very little to distract us from ourselves. Sometimes I think that was a good thing. Anymore, the distractions are rampant. It's tough to get the family together for dinner one night a week. When I was a kid, we ate together every night.I think that was a good thing. And it wasn't just my family, it was like that all over America. Beyond that, there seemed to be this larger sense of community back then. I am not just waxing nostalgic here.I really believe that a simpler lifestyle made us a more cohesive society.

Warsaw Tennis Season Ends At Portage Semistate

PORTAGE -ÊWhen the Warsaw tennis team finished last season with a loss in the semistate, the girls set a goal for this season - to make it back there this year.Only this time they wanted a different outcome -Êa win and a trip to the state meet. Like last year, the Tigers faced off against Penn in the opening match of the Portage Semistate. And like last year, the Kingsmen topped the Tigers 3-2. However, the weather conditions were a bit different from last year.Winds were gusting from 25 to 50 miles per hour and wind chills made the temperature feel like 30 degrees.Despite the unseemly contitions, the Portage athletic director refused to move the matches inside. "This was not tennis weather," said Warsaw coach Rick Orban."Do I think we should have gone inside? Yeah. "At this level of tennis, it was not fair to the girls to play in this weather. But both teams had to play in the same conditions.

She suggests that "we are in for it."And she ought to know, having been through a couple of snowbound winters in the past. "We had a bad winter in '78 and '79," she said."And one in '29 and '30, the year we moved to Warsaw and lived in an apartment." The "we" includes her husband, L.M."Pete" Carlin, who died in 1982.They were married for 53 years. In 1932 they moved to the Main Street residence and she has lived there ever since.
