Free Throws Big For Triton Boys

BOURBON - Over the summer, the Triton boys basketball team traveled to Spiece Fieldhouse in Fort Wayne and won a team free throw shooting contest. That charity stripe acumen came in handy as the Trojans went 28 of 34 from the line in a 56-53 win over Oregon-Davis in Triton's season opener Friday night. In a back and forth affair, Triton was able to hang on despite a late Bobcat charge. With 26.3 seconds left in regulation and the Trojans up 55-53, Triton gave Oregon-Davis new life. After the Bobcats' Justin Egger missed the second of two free throws, the Trojans gave the ball right back on an over-and-back call. Oregon-Davis looked to run a play but an errant pass forced Egger to attempt to save the ball from going out of bounds buy throwing it into the arms of Triton freshman Bruce Grimm. Grimm was fouled then hit 1 of 2 free throws to push the Trojan lead to 56-53.

NorthWood Football Team Adds To Warrior Woes

SYRACUSE - Wawasee is only about 15 miles down the road from NorthWood. But in terms of football programs the two schools are drastically far apart. NorthWood, led by all-purpose quarterback Charlie Roeder and 1,000-yard rusher Aaron Huber, is considered one of the top teams in the area. The Panthers flexed their proverbial football muscle as they held off a feisty Wawasee squad 34-14 Friday. The Panthers got off to a furious start as they drove the ball 67 yards in nine plays, with Huber finishing the drive on an 8-yard run. Wawasee quickly responded, mounting a drive of its own.The drive was quickly halted, however, when on first-and-10 Warrior running back Rustin Mikel was brought down 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage.Forced to air the ball out, Wawasee's drive stalled.

Big Second Quarter Puts Warsaw Over Columbia City

The Warsaw girls basketball team hit the road to take on rival Columbia City in a contest featuring two top 20 teams looking to keep one streak alive, the undefeated start to the season, while also breaking another. The Lady Eagles had won the last three matchups in the longstanding rivalry, but the most recent matchup belonged to the Lady Tigers. Using some suffocating defense and another efficient night scoring the basketball, Warsaw was able to come away with yet another victory, 65-50, to start the season 12-0.
