Patrons Express Displeasure With School Board

Almost 100 people, including two state representatives and one state senator, packed into the conference room at the Warsaw Community Schools' administration building Monday, and almost all of them were there to voice their dissatisfaction with the superintendent and board. The issue drawing so much fire was the superintendent's proposal to close the district's three smallest schools - Atwood, Claypool and Silver Lake - and move the students into the remaining schools in Warsaw. The proposal is the third since May made by superintendent Dr.Dave McGuire. The previous proposal - to renovate Claypool and build a new Jefferson Elementary - was remonstrated against, and the board voted Monday not to challenge the remonstrance. McGuire caused a vocal reaction when he read his opening statement. One of the issues he mentioned was other programs that could be cut to save the small schools.

PIERCETON -ÊSummer school for Whitko Community School Corp.is canceled this year. Whitko Director of Curriculum Diana Showalter recommended to the Whitko School Board Monday that summer school be canceled due to the state Legislature's budget cuts. "The funding is just not there for summer school," she said. Only driver's education and summer band will be offered.Summer band will still be held because the fall band program is dependent on fielding the band in the summer.Showalter said if the state Legislature gets back on track, she hopes they will be able to offer summer school next year. Board member Dave Tranter made the motion to approve Showalter's recommendation, saying it was being made with "great sadness" and he hoped not having summer school wasn't permanent.
