Fund-Raiser To Benefit Bourbon EMS

BOURBON - The Bourbon Emergency Medical Service will benefit from a fund-raiser this spring sponsored by one of the town's newest businesses. EMS board president Ken Cretcher told the board Monday that the owners of Bourbon Street Motorcycles are planning a grand opening celebration for June 7 and would like EMS personnel to hold a chicken barbecue that day, with proceeds going to the EMS.Cretcher said the service needs a new base radio and the cycle shop owners agreed that would be the goal of the project. EMS personnel will sell advance tickets as well as at the barbecue.Tickets may be purchased from any emergency medical technician. Cretcher said an open house for the new EMS building is being planned for 9 a.m.to 5 p.m.May 24 in conjunction with Statewide EMS Week, May 18-24.Members of the all-volunteer service will show visitors around the building, explain equipment used and serve refreshments.

Home For The Holidays

Not every family will be together this holiday season as many men and women in the armed services still are serving overseas in Iraq as well as other parts of the world. But for at least one local family, Thanksgiving meant a little more this year when Spec.James M.Smith returned home the weekend of Nov.22, just in time for the holidays. His mother, Dixie Houck, said, "This has been a wonderful Thanksgiving, having him home....It's just great - no words, really." "It's wonderful to have him back," said James' oldest sister, Jodie Smith Bare."We missed him a great deal.I'm glad he's back to be with his son (Zachary).We all really missed his sense of humor.We're glad to have him back.When he walks in a room, the room lights up.Above all else, he's home and safe." Saturday, James' family and friends held a "Welcome Home" party for him at American Legion Post 49, Warsaw.

Vikings Beat Governors, First Win Over 5A School Since ‘96

Facing off against a 5A team for the first time since 1999 (Warsaw) Tippecanoe Valley welcomed Hammond Morton to Akron Friday night. The Vikings led for almost the entirety of the game, and even after a shootout of a second half, Valley was able hold on for a 35-23 win, the team’s first win over a 5A school since 1996 (12-0 over Warsaw).

Webster Senior Citizens Seeking To Organize

NORTH WEBSTER - Senior citizens expressed interest in forming an organization.They met Wednesday in the old elementary school's cafeteria. About 30 people attended the informal meeting conducted by Bob Murphy of R.P.Murphy and Associates. Murphy said the goal is to use the old North Webster Elementary school to the fullest extent possible. The Wawasee School Corp.plans to begin the second semester in the new elementary school on CR 750E near CR 600N. For the last two years plans have been formulated to use the old school on Ind.13 as a community center. The North Webster-Tippecanoe Township Library, the Kosciusko Comunity YMCA, Lakeland Youth Center and the town have expressed interest in using the building. An organized senior citizens club will facilitate grant applications, Murphy said.

City Planners Approve Amendments To Sign, Structure Rules

The Warsaw Plan Commission approved favorable recommendations Monday for amendments to the real estate sign and accessory structure ordinances. According to city planner Jeff Noffsinger, Dan Wildaman and Fred Johnson, on behalf of the Kosciusko County Board of Realtors, petitioned the city to make a revision to the ordinance to allow directional real estate signs in the community.

Judge Splits Decision On Rolling Hills Lawsuits

Three lawsuits filed in connection with complaints in the Rolling Hills subdivision were consolidated, and the special judge appointed to hear the matters recently issued his ruling, a split decision among the parties. The Rolling Hills Property Owners Association, Center Island Development Inc., G.Baxter Lee Jr., Sally Bair, Krin Devore, Judy Enyeart and Thomas Cain are the plaintiffs against the city of Warsaw and its board of zoning appeals, as well as LRC Products and Philip W.Barkey. The Hon.James R.Heuer of Whitley County served as special judge in the matters filed in Kosciusko Circuit Court. At issue were the Warsaw BZA's decision to grant a variance to LRC Products, a Warsaw Plan Commission decision to vacate a portion of the plat of Rolling Hills Subdivision 4 and enforcement of the subdivision's restrictive covenants. LRC operates a commercial business on North Detroit Street and it constructs laminated rafters and engineered wood products.

Griffin Focuses On Toll Road Plan In State Treasurer Race

Democratic state treasurer candidate Michael Griffin is focusing in his campaign on using proceeds from a long-term lease of the Indiana Toll Road to generate construction funding for the next 75 years. Griffin faces Republican Richard Mourdock in the Nov.7 general election race.Tim Berry serves as the current state treasurer. Griffin, of Highland, was elected clerk-treasurer of Highland in 1991 and has served four terms in the office. He holds a bachelor's degree from Indiana University in political science, and a master's degree in public management from Indiana University Northwest.He is an adjunct instructor at Indiana University Northwest where he teaches courses in urban policy, local government and public finance. Griffin, who has never run for a statewide political office before, wants to move the treasurer's office toward more e-banking so less paper and resources are used, and improve data management for tax collection.

City OKs Large Retail Zoning Ordinance

Warsaw City Council Monday approved an ordinance that defines where large retail sales establishments can be located in the city and the types of materials that can be used for the buildings.

Etna Green To Upgrade Town's Water System

ETNA GREEN - With the completed water study in hand, the Etna Green Town Council on Tuesday decided to move ahead with plans for a proposed upgrade and will seek grant funding for the project. Council president Andy Cook said he would like to contact Commonwealth Engineering to "see what it will take to get it rolling."The proposal calls for a new well field, a 250,000-gallon elevated storage tank and replacement/updating of water lines throughout the town. The work will cost more than a million dollars.Impact on residents, as far as water rates are concerned, will depend on the financing the town secures and the number of years it takes to repay any loans.The town plans to seek grant money from the Indiana Department of Commerce and Farmers Home Administration.
