Longtime Fireman To Remain On City Insurance After Retirement; Gang Task Force Account OK'd

Gene Fancil will continue on the city's health insurance plan as an individual when the 33-year fire department veteran retires. Warsaw Board of Works members decided Fancil's status and also set up a donation acceptance procedure for the Kosciusko County Gang Task Force during Friday morning's meeting. Fancil, who is a driver for the fire department, began his tenure with the city in 1966 as a volunteer for 11 years.Fire chief Matt Warren made the insurance request on Fancil's behalf. Costs to carry Fancil will be about $200 per month. "I have no problems with this after all the years he has served," said BOW member Jerry Patterson. The board also heard from Warsaw Police Department Cpl.Mike Cox on behalf of the gang task force.Cox asked the city to set up an account so donations could be accepted.The request was approved.

Local Retired Band Director And Former Student Share The Stage at Carnegie Hall

Retired Grace College and Warsaw Community High School band director Marty Becker will be a guest conductor next week at Carnegie Hall. Becker was asked by one of his former students, Leif Hall, to share this experience.  Hall graduated from WCHS in 1994 and started in band on trumpet under Becker’s mentorship in the fifth grade. Hall also came back to Warsaw Schools and taught middle school band for a couple of years.   Becker said, “There is no greater honor or reward in teaching than seeing a former student achieve success. I am so proud of Leif and all he is accomplishing with his outstanding band program in Houston. I am thrilled and honored that I get to share this experience with my former student.”

Fifteen homeowners from Waubee Lake Tuesday tried to stop a development that will bring more neighbors to their retirement paradise. Unfortunately for them, the Kosciusko County Commissioners, like the Area Plan Commission, needed a stronger argument than the residents' desire to "preserve the pristine rural nature" of their existing neighborhood near Old Ind.15 and CR 1150N.The APC approved the rezoning on a 5-1 vote, with 3 abstentions.
