Triton Boys' Improvement Continues

BOURBON - Despite losing a tight 55-53 overtime game to John Glenn on Friday night, the Triton boys basketball team learned something that night.The Trojans learned how to win the close games.Armed with that new knowledge, they put it to the test Saturday and came away with a 54-47 win over Culver Military. Derek Ganshorn stepped up for short-handed Triton on Saturday with 19 points on five three-pointers.Without Andy Westafer, who is suspended for three more games, the Trojans lost a key player, but it didn't affect them in large part because of Ganshorn's play.

Webster Council Finishes 2001 Business

NORTH WEBSTER - Town council members finished 2001 business Wednesday with financial transactions to balance accounts and by approving the salary ordinance for 2002. Town council members receive $3,000 per year with an additional $500 for the council president; the clerk-treasurer's salary was set at $32,860; town marshal at $40,000; deputy marshal at $28,450; street crossing guard at $18 per day; public works supervisor at $42,330; assistant to the supervisor, $29,000; public works employees receive a minimum of $8 an hour, with the clerk-treasurer's assistant receiving a minimum of $7.Park board members receive $250 per year. Bob Murphy of R.P.Murphy and Associates said he would have the report ready Jan.7 regarding the North Webster Elementary School. Murphy said he would have insurance and demolition figures at that time, as well as where the money to fund the project will come from.

Warsaw lot donated for home construction

The vacant lot at 603 E.Main St., Warsaw, was officially signed over to Habitat for Humanity Friday afternoon. David Blackwell of Century 21 and Kay Young of Todd Realty in Syracuse met at Bodkin Abstract to take care of the closing service, title insurance and paperwork. The property was donated by Associates Financial Services Co.at Blackwell's suggestion.Young also has been closely involved with this project and has been making plans for the lot. Warsaw building inspector and assistant building commissioner Pam Kennedy said this is the first time she's heard of a lot being donated to Habitat in Warsaw. The first thing Habitat for Humanity needs is a corporate sponsor or a church to fund the building of a house on the property.The sponsor's donation will be tax deductible. "It's a great project," Young said.

SOUTH BEND - Small children rode their daddies' shoulders and amateur photographers raised lenses to record in memory and on film the arrival of U.S.President George W.Bush at the South Bend Regional Airport Thursday. More than 5,000 voices shouted greetings when the president appeared, waving, at the door of Air Force One, outside the ATA Connection hangar. Bush attended the rally in the city prior to appearing at a fund-raiser for Chris Chocola last night.Chocola is the Republican nominee for Congress in November's Second District race. Flanked by local dignitaries, including the East Side Little League girls softball team, he spoke for more than half an hour about the problems "we face as Americans." The body of the speech focused on terrorism and "the enemy who hates us."The president touched on economic stability, the need for an energy bill and the newly enacted corporate reform legislation.
