Lilly Funds Used In County's Fight Against Drug Abuse

With a freshly granted $286,228 from the Lilly Endowment, a group of county organizations are focusing attention and funding on various local drug-related programs. The Kosciusko Community Collaboration, comprised of numerous foundations, businesses and city and county departments, will be allocating funds to projects for the education, prevention, treatment and enforcement of substance abuse. "What I liked most about this project was the broad range of community interest in dealing with the drug problem," Warsaw Police Chief Steve Foster said."I saw a significance in what was being researched and what they focused their attention on." By the end of the month, the collaboration hopes to provide 200 locks for anhydrous ammonia storage tanks located throughout the county.The ammonia, an ingredient used in methamphetamine production, is purchased yearly by farmers and used twice on crops during the growth process.

Mentone Seeks Grant For Library

MENTONE - No remonstrance was voiced during a hearing Monday regarding reapplication for grant money for the Bell Memorial Public Library project. The town will be the recipient of the grant, and the hearing took place during the Mentone Town Council meeting. The project was twice denied by the Indiana Department of Commerce, first because the day care center hadn't acquired its nonprofit status and second because the actual plans for the day care weren't established. The library, with the support of the town, has been trying to secure funds for the property for more than a year.Plans for the new location in the old Frank Mfg.building include room for the library, a day care center and a senior citizen center. The IDOC grant being sought is for $500,000.The library also is pursuing a grant from the Dekko Foundation.The total cost of the project is anticipated to be $1,138,868.18.The state grant will be administered by Murphy & Associates, Larwill.

Registration for the 1996-97 school year gets under way next week for most Kosciusko County school systems.The first day of classes follows for all five schools the week of Aug.19. Following is a complete registration schedule and the basic book fees for elementary and, when available, middle school students.Charges for some middle school students and all high schoolers vary based on electives taken.Most schools require fees to be paid at registration. Summer School Reimbursement Down for Warsaw Schools

Warsaw Schools received its summer school reimbursement from the state in November, but it was about $30,000 less than the prior year, Chief Financial Officer Kevin Scott told the school board Tuesday at its public work session.
