Earl Seeking Coroner's Job

It's an uphill battle, but Alan Earl is ready for the challenge. The Democratic challenger for the office of county coroner, Earl, 27, said he's running because he believes the electorate deserves a choice. "Over the last 20 years there's never been a contested election," he said."It's just basically been a coronation." Earl, a funeral director at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, is running against Republican Larry E.Ladd in November's general election.Ladd, the manager of Jellystone Campground in Pierceton, is currently deputy coroner. Indiana law does not require county coroners to be medical doctors. A Warsaw native, Earl is a 1987 graduate of Tippecanoe Valley High School, attended Xavier University in Cincinnati and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1992. He recently returned to Kosciusko County after living in Cincinnati and Indianapolis, and said he's happy to be back.


Manchester Seeks New Plan Director

NORTH MANCHESTER - After retiring at the end of December, North Manchester Building and Plan Commission Director Bernie Ferringer has found himself back on the job. Ferringer announced to council members in November his plans to retire at the end of the year. Since then, town manager Dan Hannaford introduced to council members Ferringer's replacement, Jack Ferguson. Ferguson has been working with Ferringer and council members to get acquainted with the town and his new duties as plan director.

Manchester Hears Of Impending Budget Cuts

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊManchester Schools superintendent Diana Showalter gave the board and attendees at Tuesday night's meeting a "cursory review" of the corporation's 2004-05 cost reduction plan. The plan will cut $400,000 from the school's $9 million budget and will "eliminate nearly everything but the basic positions and programs," Showalter said. Which programs and teachers will be eliminated was not announced, as Showalter and school administrators wish to personally announce lay-offs and program cuts to each individual affected. To determine what areas can be cut back, school administrators met with educators from each building and took suggestions.They also heard recommendations from the community and school staffs. Cost-saving measures that had the least impact on students' education process were the ones chosen.

Grace Village To Expand

WINONA LAKE - Grace Village Retirement Community plans to add a wing of assisted-living apartments, and groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the addition Tuesday. Jeff Carroll, Grace Village chief executive officer, said the addition provides space where a person can come in and "age in place." The facility currently has 30 assisted-living apartment, and the addition means 26 more along Sunset Drive. The one-bedroom spaces are 500 square feet and offer a kitchenette, large closets and bay windows. Grace Village is a continuing care retirement community and has accommodations ranging from completely independent to those allowing full nursing care. "The addition allows older adults to live in a secure Christian environment," Carroll said. Robinson Construction received the contract for the project, which will be paid for through a bond issue backed by the town, not to exceed $4.5 million.
