KABS Facing Significant Financial Hurdles

Despite already having tightened their belts in the past year, officials with KABS are facing even more financial difficulties in 1997. Kosciusko Area Bus Service raised fares a year ago in preparation of an estimated 17 percent cut in federal funding effective Jan.1. Although they've made preparations for the upcoming year, KABS is looking at more financial difficulties in 1998, said director Tom Sherrin. More reductions in funding loom as a result of policies prescribed by the government for Cardinal Center, an agency that works with disabled people which represents a significant portion of KABS users. With a decrease in centralized programming at Cardinal Center for some clients, Cardinal expects an overall reduction in the use of KABS - and therefore plans to reduce its funding for KABS.

I'm not so sure I like all this budget surplus stuff.

This means the government has even more of our money to play around with. The government is taking in more than it budgeted, so they call it a surplus. But it really isn't a surplus because the Social Security trust fund is underfunded. But they call it a surplus anyway. They shouldn't.Frankly, they shouldn't call it a trust fund, either. A trust fund is generally set up so you can't use it for anything other than its intended purpose. They've been raiding that Social Security trust fund for a long time. So the surplus really isn't a surplus and the Social Security trust fund isn't really a trust fund. But for the sake of this column I'll roll with them and pretend there is a surplus.

Biomet Announces $9 Million Charge In Orthofix Case

Biomet Inc.announced Thursday it has recorded an additional pretax charge of $9 million and has restated its previously announced results of operations for the quarter that ended Nov.30, 1999, as a result of the final resolution of outstanding matters in the Orthofix litigation. Previously, Biomet reported a special charge of $55 million in its fiscal 1999 consolidated financial statements as a result of the June 30, 1999, decision by the U.S.Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. The decision eliminated all but $1 million of the punitive damage award but upheld the compensatory damages awarded to Orthofix by the trial court. The U.S.Supreme Court declined to review the Third Court's decision, leaving its damage award standing. The additional charge recorded in the second quarter reflects the final determination of the interest element of the judgment.

State Board Of Accounts Audit Shows $25K Missing From Silver Lake Accounts

More than $25,000 is missing from Silver Lakes coffers, according to a State Board of Accounts audit for 2004. The state's audit also found that financial records were inaccurate and incomplete; that one month's balances did not agree with the next month's balances; and that many receipts and disbursement records did not exist. The town's clerk-treasurer, Angela Glass, was elected during an Aug.19, 2003, town convention, defeating incumbent Teresa Howell.Howell's exit conference with the State Board of Accounts in February 2004, was without comment, meaning all the monies were accounted for and the ledgers were complete and accurate. There are eight pages of comments regarding Glass' record keeping in 2004.Town council members Tom Waite, Ron Jones and Stanley Williams were present when the contents of the report were discussed by auditors March 14.

Brown - That is Not How They Roll

I’m not a fan of most television commercials, but in particular, I cannot stand those annoying drug commercials which promise to cure a particular ailment as long as you can live with the potentially fatal side effects.
