Resist Temptation And Use A Smart Holiday Spending Approach This Year

You can almost hear people in stores saying to themselves, “This year, it’s going to be different. This year, I’m going to keep my holiday spending under control.” It’s easy to understand how so many people get themselves in over their heads during the holiday season.

Warsaw School Board Should Show Us The Money

In nearly two decades of attending school board meetings, covering meetings regarding school business and reading about the decisions of school board members, never have I felt so uninformed as with recent proposals by the Warsaw Community School Corp. Whenever a corporation has suggested schools be closed and a new one built, the justification has always been accompanied by charts, graphs and columns of figures. If a representative said the corporation would save money - voila! Long columns of numbers were provided on a screen and on handouts for anyone to follow along. The savings, over the course of a few years, were always evident.

Zoners Deny Sign Request, Grant Variance For Tower

A request by Mary McCook to increase the size of an illuminated sign at her business on East Market Street was denied Monday by the Warsaw Board of Zoning Appeals. In August 1991, McCook received permission to place a sign in the residentially zoned district beyond development standards, 16 square feet, to 48 square feet, advertising the location of New Moves Wellness Center. Also approved was a 66-square-foot wall sign and a 120-foot wall sign. City planner Jeff Noffsinger said the present sign is already too large for the area. The proposed new sign would be 8.7 feet tall, exceeding the maximum height restriction of 6 feet. McCook said a portable message board, the use of which is limited to 90 days per year, helped their business.

Zoners OK Petition Despite Complaints From Neighbors

Residents along Kyle Road remonstrated Tuesday against Greg White's petition for a variance, citing concerns about traffic, safety and water run-off. But the Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals approved White's petition after weighing both sides of the issues. White petitioned for a variance to allow two additional sell-offs on 15 acres. The property, on the north side of Kyle Road and zero feet north of Kyle Road in Tippecanoe Township, already has sold the maximum number of sell-offs. Attorney Steve Snyder, representing White, said the land in question is not usable for agriculture, though it is zoned agriculture.A restrictive covenant will be placed on the plat so the 15 acres cannot be divided into more than three 5-acre tracts.Kyle Road, he said, is a gravel road but is well maintained and not traveled on too much.

Commissioners Hear Proposal For Barbee Regional Sewer District

David Doctor proposed the development of a regional sewer district for the Barbee Lakes area during the Kosciusko County Commissioners meeting Tuesday. Unlike a conservancy district, which was dissolved in the Barbee Lakes area by a vote of freeholders six months ago, a regional sewer district is a local unit of government. Doctor said the need for a regional sewer district and installation of sanitary sewers exists because of inadequate, failing and failed septic systems. "Within the Barbee Lakes area, many improved properties have no record of what type of septic system originally was installed when the property was first developed," he said."In addition, many properties operate on what is known to be inadequate, undersized septic systems that do not meet county or Indiana State Department of Health standards for septic systems." Doctor said the county department of health only has records on 50 percent of the septic systems around the Barbee Lakes.

WCS Hears Construction Update

With about six months left before the Warsaw Community High School renovation is completed, representatives of the architectural firm told the school board Monday they want to improve relations with the school corporation. Schmidt Associates already met with WCHS administrators and ironed out concerns and problems with the project to date.Thomas G.Neff, representing the company, presented information on the change orders for the project to date and the list of concerns about the project. "We believe we have a fantastic project," said Neff, which includes the Performing Arts Center, improved heating, ventilation and cooling and an expansion of the athletic complex. A process for change orders is in place."It goes through a series of steps," said Neff, ending with approval by the school board.

Syracuse Town Council Narrowly Supports Construction Of New Community Center

SYRACUSE -ÊDespite Susan Neff's resignation June 8 as the Syracuse Park Department superintendent, the community center is still on track. But it doesn't have all the town council support it had when the center was first proposed. Tuesday, the Syracuse Town Council was asked by Prince Alexander architects and bond counselors from McHale, Cook & Welch Professional Corp.to approve a resolution stating the center is needed in the community. The resolution passed, but only by a vote of 3 to 2. "When this first started, there was a definite need for this community center," said councilman Barbara Carwile."Since then, we've got Oakwood and Brook Pointe. The need to rent a place for weddings, reunions is overruled by Oakwood and Brook Pointe."She said the need is no longer there for a community center.
