Warriors Fall To Roncalli Rebels

INDIANAPOLIS - Wawasee showed they weren't scared of two-time defending 4A football champ Roncalli by jumping out to an early 10-0 lead Saturday afternoon.Roncalli showed why it was the two-time defending champ, scoring 35 unanswered points to secure its third straight state title with a 35-10 win over the Warriors in the RCA Dome. The fireworks began early when on the opening kickoff, Ben Champoux skied a kick that left the Rebel return team confused as to whether it would stay in bounds. As the ball took an Astroturf bounce, Warrior Lance Zimmerman pounced on the ball at Roncalli's 28-yard line. The Rebels held strong and kept the Warriors out of the end zone.Champoux capped the drive with a 31-yard field goal with 8:50 remaining in the opening quarter. The Warrior defense came out inspired and stuffed Roncalli running back Scott Lutgring early.Lutgring, who finished the game with 23 carries for 61 yards, was ineffective for most of the game.

Squires Fall 62-53

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊAfter practicing with as few as 10 players on the JV and varsity squads due to illness last week, the Manchester Squires had to face a conference opponent Friday and a tough Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger squad Saturday. The Squires were hoping to bounce back against Dwenger after falling to North Miami, but that was not in the cards.Manchester (6-5) fell 62-53 to the Saints. Manchester jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, but Dwenger fought back to tie the score at 6-6.A steal by Jon Filler led to a basket by Mike Hopen and an 8-6 Dwenger lead. However, the Squires were not ready to give in.Chris Lochner netted a basket to tie the score at 8-8, and then Anthony Frieden sank two charity shots and then netted a basket to build a 12-8 lead. But then Dwenger started to make a run.The Saints outscored the Squires 9-2 in the final 2:30 of the first quarter to take a 17-14 lead into the second frame.

Warsaw Grapplers Lose Tie-Breaker To Concord

When Warsaw wrestled Northern Lakes Conference opponent Concord Tuesday, the final score of 33-33 went as a loss for the Tigers after a consideration of criteria. The Minutemen had more six-point victories, six to Warsaw's five, so they were awarded the team win. "We were down and we kept coming back," said Warsaw coach Tony Boley."I was very proud of this effort." Assistant coach Scott Hutcherson praised the team in a meeting on the mat. "I saw some great wins," he told the team."I saw some great pins, and I saw you battling back." Afterwards he was quick to add, "Of course we would have liked a win, but we wrestled well and we got pins from guys who normally wouldn't get pins." The Tigers gave up forfeits in three weight-classes, but in actual on-the-mat meetings, the team score was 33-15. The competition opened at 160 pounds with a forfeit awarded to Concord.

NorthWood Win Sets Up Tonight's Big Game

SYRACUSE - NorthWood girls basketball coach Steve Neff said he wasn't kidding anybody. He admitted he and his team were looking toward a possible rematch with No.2 Wawasee Saturday in the championship game of the Wawasee 3A Sectional. With a 50-41 win over West Noble Friday night, the fifth-ranked Panthers will get that rematch with the undefeated Warriors.Wawasee (22-0) topped 9-12 Northridge 77-57 in Friday's second game. The Panthers, who improve to 19-3 with the nine-point win, jumped out to a healthy 17-4 lead when Natalie Nunemaker made good on a field goal attempt with 4:36 remaining in the second stanza. And then it was as if the Panthers were sure they were going to run away with the victory, and that wasn't the case at all. West Noble's girls basketball team was like a Rubbermaid trash can being backed into by a garbage truck, it bent in all sorts of ways, only to bounce right back.

Double OT Thriller

The best part about Warsaw's 76-73 double-overtime win over Elkhart Central Friday is that the two teams could get to do it all over again a week later. The Tigers, who face Concord Tuesday in the first game of the Elkhart Sectional, could match up with the Blazers (who drew the bye) in the second round next Friday. "Now we are in the weird position of having to earn the right to play them again - at their place," Warsaw coach Al Rhodes said."As close as this game was, looking at next week, we certainly have our work cut out for us.This game gives them all the incentive in the world should we earn the right to play them again. It makes for a real challenge as we go into the sectional." Maybe the Tigers will win and face Elkhart Central, and maybe they won't.And even if they do, the game might not come close to matching this Senior Night affair at the Tiger Den, but it certainly is interesting speculation.

Animal Shelter Situation Called 'Serious,' 'Critical'

Without more money from the county for the shelter, Animal Welfare League volunteer Lynne Vining said Kosciusko County officials will have the shelter back by Jan.1, if not sooner. "We're just about out of money. We're about to let some of the paid employees go," Vining said Monday. In their budget, AWL has approximately only $10,000 and $10,000 in a certificate of deposit, she said. But that won't carry them to the end of the year. "It's serious. It's critical," she said."We don't want to give it up but we have 100 (cats and dogs) adopted out a month and we need seven-days-a-week employees.Sunday's mostly run by volunteers." She said paid employees don't receive any benefits or paid vacations and don't get any holiday pay.On top of that, the building itself needs repairs and there is always a need for cat litter and medication. "We've been fighting a cat virus for a year. One gets it, the next thing you know, another one's got it," she said.

Quayle Kicks Off 2000 Campaign

HUNTINGTON - The song blaring out of the public address system in the Huntington North High School gymnasium was Hoosier John Mellencamp's "Small Town," but the event was anything but small time. The several thousand enthusiastic supporters were on hand for former Vice President Dan Quayle's formal announcement that he is stepping back into big-time politics - a run for the presidency of the United States. Quayle returned to his hometown Wednesday to make official his intention to seek the Republican nomination for the nation's highest office. "I've come back home to Huntington today to announce that I will seek and I will win the presidency of the United States," Quayle said, evoking a rousing ovation from his hometown supporters.
