AKRON - The Wheels on Fire Cancer Crusaders will once again be hosting their annual Smash Out Cancer event Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Akron Community Center, 815 E. Rural St., Akron.
The doors will open at 4 p.m. and the entertainment will kick off the event starting at 4:30 p.m.
Lined up to take the stage this year are Kylene Crabb, Kendra Haney, Mike Bowers, Mike Love, Ed Rock and Deb Collier’s School of Dance.
The live auction will begin following the entertainment at 6:30 p.m. If you are the winning bidder, you have a chance to walk away with a five-burner Charbroil grill, donated by Lowe’s; planter stands donated from Black Smoke Designs; a custom hardwood maple sewing cabinet with custom lift built and donated by Dave Feldman; a paddleboard, donated by Splendor Boats; an Adirondack chair, donated by Polywood; and the list just keeps going. There will be artwork pieces, tools, furniture, personal care products, zoo packages, a birthday party package donated by Eastlake Skate Center and more. A total of 35 items have been donated thus far with the list continuing to grow.
The pie auction will follow the live auction. Pies donated from members of Beaver Dam Community Church, friends, and family of team members, and those just wanting to help Wheels on Fire raise funds make the pies, cakes, cookies and cupcakes to be enjoyed by the highest bidder. Raspberry, apple, cherry, peach can all be found.
The evening ends with a beautiful tribute honoring those fighting cancer and remembering those who have been lost to the disease with a memorial candle lighting ceremony. The reading of names and lighting of the candles will begin shortly after the pie auction concludes. If you would like to have someone included in the ceremony, memorials can be purchased the night of the event for a donation of $10 at the memorial table.
Burgers, walking tacos and hotdogs along with Igloo ice cream will be available throughout the event. Drinks will also be available.
The Wheels on Fire Cancer Crusaders want those who attend the event to feel a sense of community and to realize that whoever is in this battle, they are not alone. Fundraising efforts by the team happen year-round so that those who need assistance can find it locally and ease some of the concerns they carry daily while in treatment and recovery.
