Fire Marshal Joel Shilling will serve as the new fire chief of the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, Mayor Jeff Grose announced today.
Shilling replaces Chief Brian Mayo, who resigned earlier this year effective May 1.
Shilling currently serves as fire marshal for the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, a news release from the mayor’s office states. His promotion ceremony for fire marshall was Wednesday. Shilling replaced Joe Fretz as fire marshal almost two months ago after Fretz retired.
Shilling has been with the department for eight years.
Shilling has served his community as a volunteer for Plain Township/Leesburg Fire Department for 12 years, serving as firefighter, lieutenant, captain, assistant chief and most recently as chief, the release states.
Shilling is a graduate of Warsaw Community High School and grew up in the Warsaw community. Shilling and his wife of 11 years, Andrea, reside in Leesburg with their three children.
Shilling will begin his leadership as chief on Monday, April 29, where he will command a staff of administrative personnel and 33 firefighters.

With Shilling’s move to chief, the fire marshal position will become open.
