HUNTERTOWN – A strong pressure defense by the Carroll Chargers girls’ basketball team throughout the game’s first 3½ quarters of Wednesday night’s game allowed the hosts to hold off Warsaw’s run of seven straight points in a 58-52 non-conference win over the Tigers at the Carroll Fieldhouse.

Warsaw committed 19 turnovers, 12 in the first half, and consequently surrendered 24 points to their hosts off miscues.

“Their athleticism, their length, we knew they were going to pressure us,” Warsaw assistant coach Jim Speicher said. “We buried our heads too many times trying to dribble through them.”

“Every time we got a rebound, they pressed right off a missed shot,” Speicher continued. “You don’t see that very often.”

Warsaw trailed Carroll 54-45 near the 2:30 mark in the final frame when Abby Sanner scored four of her game-high 21 points aided by Bailie Stephens’s three-point play inside in the ensuing 59 seconds. The Tigers committed four quick fouls to force the Chargers to the free-throw line, and the hosts converted each of their four free throw attempts to punctuate the 58-52 win.

The Tigers trailed 17-16 after one quarter of action, then headed into the locker room leading 28-26 on Sanner’s putback score at the first half buzzer.

The Tigers trailed 43-33 at the third quarter’s 2:51 mark in the third stanza when they scored six straight points to close the Chargers’ lead to 43-39. Carroll’s 6’0” sophomore guard Alexis Castator helped her team regain control with two straight layups, the latter from a steal off a Tiger inbound pass, to finish the period outscoring the orange and black 21-11 and take a 47-39 lead heading into the final quarter.

Carroll had four double-figure scorers led by Castator’s 15 points, Kayla Gibbs 13 points and five steals, freshman Jersey Paul’s 13 points (including three 3-point baskets), and Taylor Fordyce’s 11 points.

Sanner’s offensive effort for the Tigers included 13 offensive rebounds (19 total boards), and Stephens’s 12 points, and 5 rebounds. 6’0” freshman Brooke Winchester added 7 points including two 3-point baskets.

The JV Tigers (7-3) narrowly defeated the Chargers 24-22 led by Joey Rastrelli (10 pts), Viviana Zambrano (7 pts), and Makia Lucas (5 pts, 9 reb).

Warsaw’s won-loss record 7-3 overall, and 1-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference (NLC). They travel to Plymouth (7-2, 1-0) Saturday Dec 11 . Tip-off is 6 p.m.
