The Tigers, with only one senior on their roster (Andrew Ross, 152-lb winner in a 13-0 major decision), picked up key matches throughout the meet on the shoulders of its underclassmen. Warsaw who wrestled their fifth opponent among three events in the last six days, will take on an additional five foes tomorrow morning when they host the Warsaw Super Duals at the Tiger Athletic Recreation Center (TRAC) at 9 a.m.
“We’ve been at this Saturday, Tuesday, today and we’re going to wrestle again this Saturday,” head coach Kris Hueber said. “Some of these kids are growing up in a hurry. We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores stepping into their first year.”
Additional underclassmen along with Castro clinching Tiger match wins were sophomore Isaiah Martinez (120 lbs. pin 3:18), freshman Danny Moon (138 lbs. pin 1:41), freshman Noah Wilkins (182 lbs. pin 4:41), and sophomore Isaac Beam (220 lbs. pin 2:46).
The Tigers had some other wrestlers come close to victory, and Hueber noted despite their losses, they are improving by buying into the process. 160-lb. junior Bryson Brown is a notable example.
“We’ve got kids who are struggling to pick up varsity wins but I know they’re so close to making that happen,” Hueber remarked. “Bryson Brown is one kid who stands out to me. This year he has wrestled a handful of legitimate studs already. I know it’s gonna happen for him. He has great practice partners, and a great work ethic. He almost got the job done tonight.”
Brown lost a physical 4-3 match to Goshen’s Alex Parga. Aaron Ross, a sophomore at 145 lbs. exchanged lots of upper-body strength moves with Jose Sanchez but fell short 2-1.
Hueber was pleased with the dual meet win, but he explained how wrestling is a sport where team score focus draws attention away from the development process
“We don’t want to stop buying into the process by looking at the results. We’ve tried to temper our kids by telling them the process is more important than the results.
The meet started at its lightest weight class, 106 lbs., and the first two matches (106 lbs., 113 lbs.) resulted in an exchange of forfeits between the RedHawks and the Tigers. Bryce McNeese (sophomore, 106 lbs.) picked up Warsaw’s forfeit.
The meet was tied at six, twelve, and 18 points through the 138-pound match, and the Tigers swapped leads with the RedHawks four more times before a Goshen pin (3:41 by Jonathan Flores, 195 lbs.) stretched the guests’ lead to 33-28. The RedHawks lost one point after Flores’s win due to an unsportsmanlike conduct call, reducing their lead to 32-28 when the aforementioned pins by Beam and Castro reversed the deficit, and sealed Warsaw’s first NLC win this season.
