Cops Nab Local Shooting Suspect In Elkhart County

Russell Harty, the man involved in the shooting Oct. 8 on Pine Cone Lane in Warsaw over an alleged drug deal, was captured in Elkhart County.

Harty, 18, of 100 W. Noah St., Claypool, was booked in the Elkhart County Jail at 1 a.m. Sunday for Kosciusko County on warrants for robbery with a deadly weapon, a Level 3 felony; aggravated battery, a Level 3 felony; criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon, a Level 6 felony; and attempted theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

Elkhart County Jail Media Specialist Jen Purdue was unable to provide details surrounding Harty’s capture, but did say he did not turn himself in on the warrants.

Warsaw Police Dept. Public Information Officer Det. Brad Kellar said Harty was hiding in an Elkhart home.

Warsaw Police began a manhunt for Harty after Friday’s shooting that injured two and involved five people.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Harty and Naquan Rasheed Williams, 17, of 515 Sophie Lane, Warsaw, met with four individuals from Fort Wayne around 12:30 a.m. to purchase marijuana. When those individuals arrived, according to court papers, Harty pulled out a gun and he and Williams ordered the individuals to hand over the marijuana and empty their pockets.

When the individuals took off running, Harty fired three rounds, one of which struck Williams. Williams was en route to Parkview Hospital by private vehicle when police responded to the shots fired call. Harty’s bullets also allegedly struck one of the four individuals from Fort Wayne, who was a juvenile. The dispute was over 2 ounces of marijuana, police said.

After being treated for his gunshot wound at Parkview, police arrested Williams and charged him with robbery with a deadly weapon, a Level 3 felony; and attempted theft, a Class A misdemeanor. He’s being represented by public defender John Barrett for court proceedings.

Harty took off after the shooting and managed to evade police, even being last week’s Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week.

He’s being held with no bond until extradition to Kosciusko County.
