WINONA?LAKE – The public hearing for the 2017 budget for the town of Winona Lake went off without a hitch at Tuesday’s Town Council meeting.
The proposed budget, a net increase of about 1.7 percent from 2016, was presented to the public. The 2017 proposed budget totals $5,354,021.
No resident raised any major objections, and the town council will be asked to approve the budget at its Oct. 18 meeting.
It won’t be until December until residents see what effect the budget will have on taxes, when the results of the state’s assessed valuation comes back.
In other business:
• Town Coordinator Craig Allebach informed the council he and the planning commission are working on a plan to make minor changes to the town’s zoning ordinances.
Some measures that already been passed by the planning commission is lowering the number of unrelated occupants from six to four, no wood burning stoves in garages or carports. no carports in the front of driveways, restrictions on canvas and clotheslines in the front of the yards.
These items are not complete and will need to be voted by the town council before coming official. Allebach said he will work further with the planning commission and bring it for a town council vote in the upcoming months.
• A status report was given of the Muirfield subdivision, and it is about 98 percent completed. Tom Miller, street superintendent, said the town took the project due how the property had declined. He was impressed by the work the workers did on a less-than-desirable property.
• Allebach updated the council on the current plan for a roundabout in the city, having being shot down for a grant earlier in the year. He said the town gets to take another crack at it in October.
