Silver Lake Man Arrested After Citizen Chase
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
SILVER LAKE - One man is in custody and another could face charges after an alleged "pump-and-run" incident at a North Manchester gas station.
The owner of Clark Quick Stop on Ind. 15N in North Manchester chased the suspect from the business into Kosciusko County, where he allegedly shot out two tires on the suspect's vehicle.
Neil Lister, 23, of South CR 300E, Silver Lake, is charged with theft in Wabash County in connection with the Monday morning incident, according to Wabash County Sheriff Tim Roberts.
Information in the case was forwarded to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor's Office for review because Daniel A. Friedman, 40, of North Manchester, discharged a handgun in a possibly reckless manner, according to a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department report.
The incident here occurred shortly before noon, with Friedman trying to detain Lister near the intersection of CRs 1300S and 200W, just inside the Kosciusko County line from Wabash County.
When an attempt to block Lister's vehicle failed, Friedman allegedly shot out the driver's side tires on Lister's pickup.
Friedman told police he fired three or four shots at Lister's vehicle. Police recovered eight spent 9 mm shell casings at the scene.
For several months, police in both Wabash and Kosciusko counties have been investigating reports of a Ford Ranger pickup with duct tape covering the license plate pumping gas and leaving without paying for it. Clark Quick Stop and the McClure Oil station on Ind. 15 in Silver Lake have been repeatedly victimized, police said.
During Friedman's pursuit of Lister, Friedman said he lost Lister for a short time, but caught up with him again near where the shooting incident took place. Friedman said Lister was out of his pickup at that time attempting to remove duct tape from his license plate.
When Lister's vehicle became disabled, he reportedly ran from the scene into a field, where Claypool and Silver Lake police officers apprehended him.
Officers from North Manchester Police Department and the Indiana Conservation Department also assisted in the incident. [[In-content Ad]]
