FORT WAYNE - Even without their leading scorer, the Homestead Lady Spartans didn't have much trouble with the Manchester Lady Squires.

Getting six goals from six different players, the Spartans (12-4-3) punched their ticket into Saturday's girls soccer sectional championship at Homestead with a 6-0 win over the Lady Squires (8-6-7) Thursday.[[In-content Ad]]"We just found a way and worked together," Homestead coach Katie Metz said about scoring six goals without sophomore leading scorer Kelsey Wendlandt.

Instead of relying on one player, Metz had two girls that hadn't scored all season find the back of the net, meaning all 19 of her position players scored at least one goal this year.

"Without our leading scorer, we got a lot of other girls to step up," Metz said.

It did take the Lady Spartans just over 13 minutes to score their first goal, but the next five came over the remainder of the first half, giving the host team a 6-0 halftime advantage.

"Our goal was to show up and play the best we could and just do our best," Manchester coach Carrie Clothier said. "We all knew how good Homestead was. We had nothing to lose."

Homestead was good enough to prevent Manchester from taking a shot, and even used the second half to work on its game without trying to score.

"We wanted to work on our crosses and score off headers," Metz said.

While Homestead was working on how to get better for Saturday's match against Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, Manchester was wrapping up a pretty successful season.

"This is the best we've done record-wise and as far as talent," Clothier said. "The girls brought it up a notch."
