WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Mark Souder announced today that H.R. 2863, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2006, includes $1.3 million Souder secured for an orthopedic research partnership between three employers-Biomet, Zimmer, and DePuy-in Warsaw and the University of Notre Dame's Center for Orthopedic Research and Engineering.
Souder had worked over the last several months to ensure that this set-aside was included in the legislation. An overwhelming bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives voted for House passage of the bill by a vote of 398-19.
"As a result of the enhanced use of body armor by our courageous men and women in uniform, which helps protect their vital organs, a greater proportion of the injuries our troops sustain are orthopedic-related," Souder said. "With such leading orthopedics employers, it was only natural that northern Indiana would be involved with this important research."
"I'm very pleased that the House of Representatives has agreed to my request," Souder added. "The next step is to ensure that it is part of the final House-Senate agreement."
Specifically, the funding would be used to address soldier recovery, readiness and quality of life in orthopedics and tissue engineering. In addition to Biomet, Zimmer, DePuy and Notre Dame, the partnership would include Indiana University, Purdue University and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. [[In-content Ad]]
