Police Investigate Lottery Scam

Police are investigating a possible scam involving a Canadian lottery. A rural Warsaw woman contacted the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department Saturday after she wired more than $2,800 to a location in Montreal. The woman told police a man called her residence and said she won $100,000 in the Canadian lottery and, to claim her prize, she had to send cash to cover the amount of taxes on her winnings. This took place Friday. After sending the money via Western Union, she thought the call may not have been legitimate and contacted authorities. She has not received any money from the source of her alleged winnings. Police have gotten telephone calls from people victimized by similar scams in the past and warn residents not to send money or provide credit card or bank account numbers to anyone via telephone. If such a call is received, a name and telephone number should be obtained so that the possible victim can call the person back.

5 Teens Escape Serious Injury In Crash

LEESBURG - Five Wawasee High School students escaped serious injuries Wednesday when the car they were in left the roadway and rolled over several times. According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, the driver of the car was Matthew J.Miller, 16, of Milford. The accident occurred about 1:20 p.m. Sgt.Chad Hill of the KCSD said Miller took his eyes off the road and, when he looked back, there was a small animal in front of him.Miller swerved his car to avoid the animal, causing the vehicle to roll several times into the yard of Robert Bishop, West CR 700N, west of Leesburg. Hill said the fact that all five of the occupants of the car were wearing seat belts "greatly diminished" the injuries the teen-agers suffered. Passengers in the car were Amber L.Miller, 14, Milford; Austin P.Miller, 16, Leesburg; and Travis A.Smith, 16, and Haley P.Plikerd, 15, both of Syracuse.

WCHS Closes Early After Water Problem

A water problem at Warsaw Community High School sent students home after lunch today. According to WCHS principal Dr.Jennifer Brumfield, two days ago the main water valve was turned off because contractors added a new valve to the system. "Apparently, when the main valve was turned back on, it was turned on full forcce," said Brumfield."Plastic beads from the water softener were forced throughout the system." Those beads traveled through the pipes at the high school, clogging toilets, faucets and water fountains, prompting the school to send students home this afternoon. According to Brumfield, the problem is related to the construction project.Contractors are responsible for the problem, and the work was done by outsidee companies, not school employees. Brumfield said the problem started yesterday but got worse today.Employees at the school unclogged toilets, faucets and fountains, but they refilled quickly.
