Wawasee Moves To Soften Budget Impact

SYRACUSE -ÊWith the state cutting funding to schools due to the budget crisis, the Wawasee School Corp.Board of School Trustees took two steps Tuesday to help with their budget next year. First, the board approved a resolution allowing the school corporation to transfer money from the Capital Projects Fund to the General Fund. Director of finance Jim Evans told the school board the state Legislature approved Public Law 178-2002 to allow school boards to make such a transfer for one time because of the state budget problems.The amount a school board can transfer from the CPF, Debt Service Fund, Transportation Fund, School Bus Replacement Fund or both the Transportation Fund and School Bus Replacement Fund is determined by multiplying $0.0328 by the school's reassessment valuation.

- U.S.30 - Liberal Thought - Father's Day - Right To Dissent - AWL U.S.30 Editor, Times-Union: I really enjoy the opinions column, particularly on days when it's filled with a variety of hodgepodge. The subject of traffic deaths out on 30 is just about boring me to tears.People die in traffic accidents every day. An article on Thursday's front page caused me to ask myself a question.The article was titled "Warsaw Man Charged with Dealing Cocaine."The question is for the Kosciusko County Drug Task Force.Just how big of a bite out of crime would you be willing to take to rid Warsaw of this cocaine problem? To publicly humiliate the guy selling it by printing his name on the front page was a real good step one.This is my suggestion for step two.

Pedestrian Injured

A Warsaw man suffered a broken leg when he was struck by a car about 6 p.m. Friday on Ind. 15 near Penguin Point, Warsaw. Gary L. Keck, 49, was injured when he stepped out in front of the car driven by Ida T. Troup, 70, Milford. The impact of the collision flipped Keck over the hood of the car, then onto the ground. Troup told police she did not see Keck. Keck said he did not see Troup's car approaching as he tried to cross the street. Keck was being treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital for his injuries and was expected to be released late Friday. Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union

Shirley Ann Loy, of Pierceton, died Jan. 25, 2008, in Grace Village, Winona Lake.She was born March 22, 1935, in Tipton County. She married Stan Loy, who survives.

Harry Arthur West, 69, of Monticello, Ky., and formerly of Warsaw, died April 30, 2008, in Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, Somersetr, Ky.

No Injuries In Train Accident

MILFORD -ÊAn Elkhart man and his 4-year-old son escaped injury after the pickup in which they were riding was hit by a train at 2:28 p.m.Tuesday. According to Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department officials, Edward McDonald, 40, Elkhart, was driving his vehicle around a curb when he saw several individuals at a pond.He briefly looked in their direction and, before he knew it, he was on the train tracks.Noticing an approaching train, he stepped on the accelerator but was not able to avoid being hit by the locomotive. The train struck the right rear of the pickup, causing the vehicle to go into a spin.The pickup was totaled.
