WINONA LAKE – A Centennial Celebration booth and tent at the Juried Art Fair in Winona Lake this weekend will introduce a number of new products.
June 2810 Years AgoIn April, 65 students of the Redeemer Lutheran School filled 75 boxes with school supplies for children in Paraguay. As part of the “By Kids – For Kids” program, students in grades K-6 joined with thousands across North America who collected and packed the supplies. Each box also contains a small toy, a storybook in their language, a personal note and a photo of the child who packed the box. Teacher Nancy Dressler works with students: Hannah Harrold, Kelly Williams, Tyler McDonald, Ciera Bolden, Jon Hillery and Carlie Sechrist.25 Years AgoWhitko High School announced the valedictorian of the 1988 graduating class will be Stephanie Mundy, daughter of Steve and Barb Mundy, South Whitley. She plans to attend Anderson University. Elizabeth Masterson has the honor of being chosen salutatorian. She is the daughter of Mike and Jimma Masterson, Sidney, and plans to attend Purdue University. Both recipients were “a little shocked” when they heard the announcement. Stephanie’s speech at the commencement May 28 will be “Reflect,” on her fond memories of school. Elizabeth’s talk, “Follow Your Heart,” will be about pursuing dreams. She wants students to realize “the sky’s the limit.” 50 Years AgoThe Winona Lake Bible Conference, in its 70th consecutive year, will convene July 21 and run through Aug. 25. The summer season, according to Dr. Gordon I. Beck, executive manager, officially opens June 17 with the Evangelical Free Church of America, followed by the Oriental Missionary Society, Youth For Christ International and Moody Alumni conventions. Outstanding national and international speakers will appear at Winona Lake, including Dr. Oswald Smith. Continued improvements to the ground and facilities of the Billy Sunday Tabernacle will greet the thousands of visitors this summer.75 Years AgoOn October 16, 1936, Lloyd Miller, North Webster, applied for a patent on a vehicle bumper, which he claimed embodied a number of new ideas. After two years, patent examiners this week allowed one of his claims and have sent the inventor a certificate recognizing the originality of his invention. Miller has as yet made no assignment of his patent rights, either for manufacture or exploitation. A vehicle bumper comprises a body bar, light reflecting plates secured to the bar at regular spaced intervals and extending from the upper to the lower edges of said plates. Substantial shaped impressions therein provide light-reflecting facets.
A northwest Kosciusko County business asked the Area Plan Commission Wednesday to recommend altering some zoning restrictions so it can enhance the appearance of its building, increase storage capacity and improve security.
