Littlefield Earns Gold Star Award For Valor

An Indiana State Policeman from Warsaw was honored Friday with an award for bravery in saving the live of a truck driver involved in a fiery crash. Trooper Thomas K.Littlefield, Warsaw, is only the fourth officer in the 63-year history of the agency to receive the Gold Star Award for Valor.Littlefield received the award last Friday at an awards ceremony in Bremen. The award was given for Littlefield's brave actions in responding to fiery car-semi crash March 12 on U.S.30 near CR 350W, Warsaw. Littlefield attempted to rescue a driver trapped in a burning car but was driven back by the flames. He then attended to the semi driver, who was lying in diesel fuel surrounded by burning grass.One of the vehicle's gas tanks exploded and burning debris was thrown on both the semi driver and Littlefield. The ISP superintendent presented the award to Littlefield for his extraordinary heroism above and beyond the call of duty.

Leesburg Intrusion Reported

LEESBURG -ÊA Milford woman reported an intruder pointed a gun at her during a burglary at a Leesburg residence early this morning. According to a report from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, a Milford woman, who is a caregiver for the resident of a home on Van Buren Street in Leesburg, reported an armed robbery around 12:54 a.m.today. The woman heard a loud noise, and when she went to investigate, found a man dressed in a black jacket with a dark cloth covering his face going through cabinets in the living room of the home.When the woman told the man to leave the house, he pointed a small silver handgun at her and asked where he could find money.After the woman said there was no money, the man made her lay on the floor then left out the back door of the residence. A purse with two credit cards and cash was missing from the residence.

Crash Kills Akron Man

MENTONE -ÊAn Akron man is dead after an early morning accident today near Mentone. Sergio E.Montelongo, 38, was pronounced dead from neck injuries at the scene of the 5:31 a.m.accident near the intersection of CR 500S and Ind.19 near Mentone.According to evidence gathered at the scene of the crash, Montelongo was not wearing a seat belt. According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, Montelongo was northbound on Ind.19 in a 2002 red Ford pickup when he swerved off the east side of the road to miss a deer standing in the roadway.Montelongo overcorrected and went back on the road then went out of control. The truck slid off the western edge of the road, struck a utility pole and rolled over several times in a field. Montelongo was ejected from the pickup and pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by the Kosciusko County coroner.

2 Dead In Syracuse; Police Suspect Murder/Suicide

SYRACUSE -ÊTwo people are dead after an apparent murder and suicide in Syracuse Thursday. According to a Syracuse Police Department press release, initial investigation shows Robert T.Wazenkewitz, 46, of 311 W.Valley View Drive, Syracuse, allegedly shot and killed Danette G.Miller, 41, same address, before taking his own life.Interviews conducted at the scene by police led officers to believe the motive was domestic issues. Syracuse dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 1:56 p.m.Thursday regarding a woman possibly dead at the residence.Police and EMS were dispatched to the scene and both victims were found in the back bedroom of the house. A paramedic confirmed the two were dead and Kosciusko County Coroner Larry Ladd was called to the scene. An autopsy will be scheduled by the coroner's office at St.Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne. The case is under investigation by the Syracuse Police Department and the Kosciusko County Coroner's Office.

No Suspects In Early Sunday Stabbing Incident

Police have no suspects in a stabbing incident early Sunday in which the victim and his friends reportedly refused to cooperate with authorities. Carlos Ibarra, 18, of North Parker Street, Warsaw, was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital and released.He suffered a stab wound to the back, just below the shoulder blade. Ibarra reportedly told police that he was at a mobile home park, possibly Shamrock Trailer Court in Warsaw, when the incident occurred.However, Ibarra and his friends refused to go with police to identify the location of the trailer and nobody claimed to have seen the assailant. About 10 people were reportedly outside the trailer when the incident occurred about 2 a.m. Ibarra told police he was outside when he realized something bad was about to happen and, when he turned to go inside the residence, he was stabbed.Ibarra told hospital officials that he suffered the wound when he fell on some broken glass, then later admitted he was stabbed.

2 Injured In Saturday Fight

Two men were injured in a fight Saturday and another man faces charges in connection with the incident. Daniel J.Hamilton and Calvin E.Thomas, both of Dot Street, Warsaw, were allegedly battered by Douglas Earl Sullivan, 38, of 1515 Maye St., Warsaw.Sullivan was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail charged with two counts of battery, and bond was set at $250. Hamilton was allegedly struck with a baseball bat and suffered a wound to the left side of his head.Thomas was reportedly punched and suffered a bloody nose and an eye injury.The blow to Thomas' eye apparently split his contact lens in half and he was unable to remove it from his eye. Hamilton and Thomas told Warsaw police they didn't know why Sullivan, who lives behind them, attacked them.However, Sullivan told police that the two men were harassing him and his girlfriend all night and that he hit them when he was chasing them back to their residence. The incident was reported at 4:58 a.m.Saturday.

Crash Injures 7

Seven people received minor injuries Tuesday in a two-car collision on East Center Street in Warsaw. The accident occurred at 8:41 p.m.Tuesday at the intersection of East Center and Lincoln streets.The car driven by Joann M.Surface, 21, of Short Street, South Whitley, was stopped at the intersection when it was hit in the rear by a car driven by Angela K.Cox, 16, Gable Drive, Warsaw. Cox complained of abdominal pain, and a passenger in her car, Lindsey N.Cox, 14, complained of facial pain. Surface and four occupants of her car also were injured.Surface suffered abdominal pain; Ella Surface, 15, complained of head pain; Rebecca Surface, 18, suffered chest pain; Patricia Trump, 15, East CR 100S, Pierceton, complained of head pain; and Jennifer Trump, 15, suffered back pain. All the people injured were taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital, where they were treated and released. The accident was investigated by the Warsaw Police Department.

Pickup Submerged

A driver unfamiliar with the area ended up parking a friend's pickup in Pike Lake early Sunday morning. Eduardo Palos Vazquez, 25, of East Main Street, Warsaw, was cited for leaving the scene of the accident after skidding into the water off the end of Bluewater Drive, a dead-end street on the north side of the lake. The accident was reported at 2:44 a.m. Sunday by a resident who heard the vehicle skid and splash into the water. Pictured riding back to shore in the bed of the pickup are Warsaw Police Department divers Chuck Hodges and Clay Layne. The vehicle was recovered 30 yards off shore in about 5 feet of water with the headlights and taillights still illuminated. Although Vazquez fled the scene and no one was found in the truck, he later went to the police station to tell officers he was the driver. Vazquez was cited for leaving the scene of an accident. Brothers Ages 8, 14 Accused Of Break-In

Two brothers, ages 14 and 8, were caught Tuesday in Pierceton breaking in to a house. A neighbor witnessed the boys breaking in to the house, and called the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office at 9:17 a.m.Tuesday.According to police reports, the two deputies who answered the call were stopped by another witness, who said the two suspects had just left the residence by the back door. The deputies spotted the boys in a wooded area behind the house and ordered them to stay where they were.When the deputies approached the suspects, the boys were eating ice cream sandwiches they reportedly took from the home. After witnesses identified the suspects as the boys they had seen breaking into the house, the deputies took the boys to the sheriff's office.The younger boy had a gold watch and three lighters; his older brother had basketball cards.Some of the items were identified by the homeowner.

Blunt Force Trauma Killed Murder Victim, Wabash Coroner Says

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊA coroner's report released last week confirmed the death of a North Manchester man July 12 was homicide. Leodegario M.Rodriguez, 30, was found dead in his mobile home at 301 S.Mill St., North Manchester, around 4 p.m.July 12. According to the coroner's report, Rodriguez's death was caused by a skull fracture from a blow to the back of his head.The coroner believes the death occurred around 10 a.m.July 12, the day his body was found. Rodriguez's body was found by a neighbor around 4 p.m.the day of his death. A suspect and motive has not been determined in the crime. The murder is North Manchester's first since 1989 and remains under investigation by the North Manchester Police Department and the Indiana State Police. No further information about the crime is being released by police officials.

Syracuse Woman Pleads In Fraud Case

SOUTH BEND - A Syracuse woman recently entered a guilty plea for a wire fraud charge in U.S.District Court in South Bend. Margaret A.Chestnut, 54, of Syracuse, pleaded guilty to wire fraud, waiving her right to a jury trial and an appeal. From 1999 to 2003, Chestnut was a bookkeeper for WE International, a manufacturing company in Syracuse owned by Carmen and Janet Wenger. Chestnut admitted to issuing checks to herself and her husband's business and forging business co-owner Jane Wenger's signature on the checks.Chestnut also issued fraudulent double paychecks to herself.She also falsified entries in checking account ledgers and destroyed documents to conceal her crime from her employers. Asst.U.S.Attorney John M.Maciejczyk said Chestnut diverted a total of $49,273.66 from WE International, but paid back $14,000 before her activities were discovered.

Plane Scare Turns Out OK

Warsaw Municipal Airport officials and emergency crews had a scare this morning when an incoming plane contacted the terminal and said its nose gear was not descending properly. The Shorts 360 plane, operated by Air Cargo Carriers as a contractor for United Parcel Service, was on its way back from Louisiana when the indicator light for the nose gear did not come on. "Usually in this situation, it's just a bad bulb," said Warsaw Airport Manager David Beall."I can't say for sure until it is checked out, but I think that's what it was last time this happened." After the two crew members of the plane reported the problem, they did a low pass of the airport.Airport officials saw that the landing gear was down.

Three Injured In Etna Green Accident

ETNA GREEN -ÊThree people were injured at 2:10 p.m.Friday in a two-car collision at the intersection of Old Road 30 and CR 875W, Etna Green. According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff Department report, Charles G.Cunningham, 41, West Lakeside Drive, North Manchester, was driving south on CR 875W when he rolled through a stop sign and accelerated into the intersection.The driver of the other vehicle, Linda Hughes, 47, South Franklin Street, Mentone, did not have time to stop and her vehicle hit Cunningham's vehicle. Cunningham told officers he did not see any east- or westbound traffic on Old Road 30. Hughes complained of back pain. Charles A.Cunningham and Caitlyn Cunningham, both of Anderson, were passengers in Charles G.Cunningham's vehicle.Charles A.Cunningham complained of pain to the elbow and lower arm.Caitlyn complained of head pain. All three injured were transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital, where they were treated and released.

Motorcyclist Killed After Hitting Semi

A motorcycle-semitrailer accident that closed U.S.30E for 1-1/2 hours Wednesday night left a Leesburg man dead.Jason L.Rodgers, 32, of 3845 E.Lakeview Trail, Leesburg, died after driving his motorcycle into the back of the semitrailer at 11:22 p.m. Rodgers was traveling eastbound on U.S.30, between Springhill Road and Parker Street in Warsaw, without a helmet, when he hit the semi.Witnesses say Rodgers was driving at high speeds and weaving in and out of traffic prior to the accident. The semi continued driving east down U.S.30 after the collision.Police believe the driver is unaware of the accident and witnesses were not able to identify the vehicle's model, color or plate number. Rodgers was transported by Multi-Township EMS to Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, where he was pronounced dead. The Warsaw Police Department and Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene. His obituary is on page 3A of today's edition.

Wal-Mart Starts United Way Effort Saturday

Wal-Mart is making a positive impact on the community, and so is the United Way of Kosciusko County.These two community resources have joined together to make changes for the better. Wal-Mart Super Center will be running a "can and tag" campaign starting Saturday in their Warsaw store.Cans will be at the checkout lanes for donations from customers.In addition, logo tags will be sold at the checkout for a dollar, and when a tag is purchased, the donor may put his or her name on the tag and have it displayed in the windows of the store.All funds raised will benefit the United Way and its 48 programs. Wal-Mart also will run an employee campaign Aug.6.This internal campaign will have a '50s theme and the store will invite their employees to buy chili dogs and root beer floats and have fun while giving back to their community.
