New Library An Asset To Community

I had a tour of the Warsaw Community Public Library this week. It is really quite an impressive facility. Even more impressive is the fact that it was a true community effort that pulled it together. Those who have been around awhile will remember that it has been a rocky road for the library over the past several years. There was a proposal back in 1992 for the library to move to the fairgrounds. But the local Taxpayers Action Network petitioned against it.They thought the price tag was too high. The TAN group won. They were successful in the remonstrance against the library's fairgrounds building plan. The debate caused a bit of a rift in the community. There were those who thought the library should move out of the aging Carnegie building. Others thought the library should stay downtown and renovate the existing facility. In the end, the stay-downtown crowd won and the library is here to stay.

Local Volunteers Return From Clinic-Building Trip To Guatemala

Work has begun and the first team is back from Chiqua Dos, Guatemala, having dug the footer for a medical clinic. "We left Feb.28 and I stayed through March 16.There were two teams that came over in that time period....We worked with about 20 national Guatemalans from the country area of Chiqua Dos," said Steve Petty, who is organizing the building teams for Hands of Hope International, the group responsible for building the clinic. "The first thing we did was prepare the site. The site was moved from the original plan and moved to a beautiful location on top of a mountain that overlooks a valley. But it was virgin land, the only thing done to it was, it was terraced, stair-stepped," he said. The 18 stairsteps on the site were approximately 3 feet long by 3 feet deep.Trees also were growing on the terrace.

Local officials urge safety

With the Fourth of July weekend quickly approaching, local officials are urging people to be cautious and stay safe. "We want people to have a good time, but be safe," said Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine."We are asking people to use basic common sense and treat others the way they want to be treated. "On the Fourth of July, we get a lot of neighbor complaints about loud music or rudeness." Of course, one of the most popular activities on the Fourth of July is watching or setting off fireworks. In the past, setting off certain types of fireworks was prohibited. Now that Indiana law has changed, setting off most fireworks is no longer illegal in the state. "We are urging people to be safe with the use of fireworks," said Rovenstine."Mainly, people should be aware of the new fireworks laws." The recently adopted fireworks law sets rules for who can use and buy fireworks, where they may be set off and the penalties for improperly using fireworks.
