Wawasee Honors Alford For Service

Before Saturday’s Wawasee boys basketball game, the program and athletic department honored Jim Alford with a plaque for his 47 seasons of keeping the Warrior scorebook.

Virginia Elizabeth King

Virginia Elizabeth King, 94, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Feb. 9, 2017, in Kosciusko Community Hospital. She was born Dec. 25, 1922, in Warsaw, to Hubert Victor and Lauretta Marie Eiler Short. On July 7, 1965, she married Ralph A. King in Columbia City. She was a 1940 graduate of Warsaw High School and a lifetime resident of the Warsaw and Larwill areas.

James S. “Jim” Shepherd

NORTH WEBSTER — James S. “Jim” Shepherd, 88, Warsaw, passed away Feb. 12, 2017, at his home.  He was born May 10, 1928, in Bippus, to George and Blanche Spicer Shepherd.  He graduated from Bippus High School and in 1952 from Indiana University in Bloomington with his B.A degree. He was a United States Navy veteran and was married Sept. 9, 1952, to Phyllis J. Wall, who preceded him Aug. 6, 2001.

Jeanette Alwine, 96, Warsaw, passed away at 4:35 p.m. Feb. 12, 2017, in Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester.  She was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Patterson, N.J., to Thomas and Jessie Dykstra Korenstra. Marjorie E. St. John

Marjorie E. St. John,  87, Rochester, passed away Feb. 8, 2017, at Lakeland (Fla.) General Hospital. She was born Aug. 24, 1929, in Peru, to Albert and Winifred Brach Becker. On Feb. 2, 1952, in Kokomo, she married  Fred St. John. He survives.

Hoffer’s Last-Second Winner Beats Spring Arbor

A big second-half from Chad Hoffer was punctuated by the game-winning basket to propel Grace’s men’s basketball team to a 65-64 win over Spring Arbor on Saturday. Hoffer, who scored all nine of his points after halftime, made a number of big plays in the second half for the Lancers (14-14, 6-10 Crossroads League). No play was bigger than his last. With the clock winding down and Spring Arbor clinging to a one-point lead, Hoffer drove into the lane with reckless abandon. He muscled up a leaning shot as he was fouled, converting the basket with 4.1 seconds remaining to send the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center crowd into euphoria.

Fribley Signs To Cheer For IWU

Warsaw senior cheerleader Sarah Fribley made it official, signing an intent to cheer and continue her education at Indiana Wesleyan University this fall. Fribley, a member of the National Honor Society, earned an impressive 11.5 Grade Point Average through her first seven semesters, and she intends to study Nursing while cheering for coach Zachary Moore and the Wildcats.

Leamon To Cheer For IWU

Warsaw senior cheerleader Morgan Leamon made it official signing an intent to cheer at Indiana Wesleyan University this fall. Leamon is a seven-letter varsity cheerleader for the Tigers, competing in three state championships for competition squad, highlighted by a fourth- and a fifth-place performance finish. Leamon received the Tiger Award for her junior year.

Wawasee Comeback Falls Short, Streak Continues

After trailing 33-29 after three quarters, Wawasee outscored Goshen 12-9 in the fourth quarter, falling just short in a 42-41 loss to the RedHawks in a Northern Lakes Conference boys basketball game Friday night. The loss extended Wawasee’s NLC losing streak to 42 games, or six full seasons. The Warriors’ last NLC win was over Northridge 73-51 on Feb. 15, 2011. Senior Trevon Coleman, in his second game back from a knee injury, scored a game-high 20 points for Wawasee. Jacob Hand had 11 points, Jairus Boyer had six and Tyler Smith scored four points for the Warriors.

County Updating Voting Machines

Kosciusko County is upgrading its 220 voting machines, putting the county in a better position to consider moving from the traditional precinct voting system to the use of voting centers.
