Zoners OK Sacred Heart Sign Variace

A second freestanding sign to identify school activities at Sacred Heart School has been approved. The Board of Zoning Appeals approved the request at its meeting Monday night. The sign will be located between the circular driveway on East Fort Wayne and Harrison streets in the grassy area. Karin Steffensmeier, representing Sacred Heart, requested a variance from development standards for a second freestanding sign on one lot in the R-1 zoning district. Steffensmeier attended Monday's meeting and said an additional sign is needed to separate school activities from Sacred Heart Church activities. The applicant requested to erect a 7-foot-high freestanding sign, with a double-sided, 4-foot by 8-foot copy area. The sign will be lighted internally. The board also approved a request from applicants Kent and Roxanne Wildman for a variance from development standards to allow for a depth-to-width ratio greater than 3 to 1 at 925 S.Zimmer Road.

Triton Students Show Conflict Resolution Skills

BOURBON - Four Triton students presented the school board with a role play last night dramatizing their newly acquired peer mediation skills. Students David Gabhart, Brittany Cook, Zak Chittum and Hannah Bessinger are four of Triton's 28 Junior-Senior High students who underwent conflict resolution and peer mediation training late last month. Education for Conflict Resolution, Indiana's leading interpersonal and organizational training center, provided the students with an intensive two-day training session, where they learned a step-by-step process and participated in realistic role-plays. According to ECR, peer mediation provides students with a "guided process for peaceful conflict resolution."Students often are more willing to discuss their problems with peers.Mediation, rather than letting problems build up, gives students a peaceful route to resolution.

Local Businesses Look To Internet For Growth

Every day the Internet grows by leaps and bounds, so it's no surprise that local businesses are posting sites to upscale their sales or make shopping easier for customers. Two area service providers are working hard to provide local businesses the services they need to use and maintain their web sites. "The services that we provide are very much geared toward business," said John Webster of KCOnline. KCOnline represents approximately 100 local businesses with Internet services that range from web sites to electronic mail only. More businesses are ready to take the plunge onto the 'net."Just in the last three or four months there have been another group of businesses that has said 'We need a presence on the Internet,'" Webster said.
