Talented Tigers Face High Expectation

What a difference a few years can make. When Craig Helfrich signed on as the softball coach at Warsaw two years ago, the team was not exactly what you would call a dominant force. "When I took over the program, there was not much enthusiasm here," said Helfrich."The winning attitude was not there." But last year, Helfrich led his Tigers to a spot few people thought they would be: The regional championship game. "Our team was 21-12 last year.We won our first sectional since 1995, and we lost the regional championship by one run to Lafayette Jefferson, 3-2," said Helfrich."No one expected us to do anything, and we were just one batter from the state game." Which leads many folks to believe that Warsaw will have a strong season this year. "A lot of successful coaches around the state are talking about this Warsaw team," said Helfrich."They say we are going to be tough this year.

Boyd Bound For State

BREMEN - Warsaw sophomore Summer Boyd entered as the fifth seed in the 800-meter run in Tuesday's Bremen track and field regional. Only the top three in each event advance from regional to state. But before Boyd ran, Warsaw coach Doug Ogle predicted she would finish in the top three. How did he know? Because Boyd's 800 seeded time came after she ran in other races like the 1,600. On this night, she had only one race to worry about, the 800.Ogle was right on.Because Boyd did not have to compete in any other event, she had her best time ever in the 800, 2:20.99.She finished behind Fairfield's Renee Schlabach, who won with a time of 2:17.29. Boyd was fourth with 120 meters to go, but she passed two runners in the last stretch to make the state cut.Her time was more than four seconds better than her first-place time in the Northern Lakes Conference meet 15 days ago.And in last Wednesday's sectional, she finished just fourth in the 800.

Valley Hopes To Keep The Volleyball Bandwagon Rolling

During the summer, the bandwagon sport was women's soccer. Tippecanoe Valley High School does not have a soccer program, but it does have a bandwagon sport: volleyball.Volleyball was Valley's best fall sport in 1998, and you know how people like to follow winners. Under coach Jon Parker, Valley recorded 16 wins in 1997, the most in school history.Valley followed it up by winning 22 in 1998. Parker senses the same enthusiasm for volleyball in 1999. "There is still a lot of talk about volleyball over here," he said."We had a neat turnout at our scrimmage Friday. We've started a tradition. Now we hope to keep it strong." At first glance, the Vikings appear to have their work cut out for them if they want to break the record for wins for the third year in a row.

Warsaw City Council At Large Candidates Answer Questions

Why do you want to serve on the Warsaw City Council? Warsaw is a great city where the people are the heartbeat of the community.I want to see us work toward maintaining a city where we enjoy prosperity while maintaining our quality of life. What single service provided by, or single department of, the city government should be recognized as being both efficient and effective and is deserving of additional support of city taxpayers? In my dealings with the various city departments it has been my experience that they all strive to be effective.Increased efficiency in the delivery of services could be accomplished through the utilization of technology and a greater degree of cooperation among the various departments.Generally, I believe the city taxpayers support city government. The burden lies more on government to be supportive and respectful of its citizens.

Valley Cruises To Win Over Triton

AKRON -ÊThe girls basketball game between Tippecanoe Valley and Triton Wednesday night was tauted as the game to see. Both Tippecanoe Valley coach Gary Teel and Triton coach Mark Heeter expected a close, hard-fought contest. "I expected the game to be close and back-and-forth the way our games have always been," said Teel."I really expected to see the difference be single digits." However, that was not the case as the Vikings topped the Trojans 56-29. "There's not much to say is there?" said Heeter."We knew that Valley was a really good team, but we just came out really flat." Triton's Ashli Senff scored the first basket of the night, but Rebekah Parker tied things up by hitting two free throws.Senff then hit a free throw to put Triton up again, 3-2.
