CVB Breaks Ground For New Facility

Before the year ends, Phil Fozo, president of the Convention and Visitors Bureau board of directors, would like to see the new Kosciusko County CVB building completed. The center will be located off U.S.30 on Capital Drive, west of SYM Financial and Bob Evans Restaurant, in Warsaw. The CVB and visitors center will serve as a distribution facility for travelers looking for information on Kosciusko County, including hotels, restaurants, attractions and festivals.There will also be room available for the center to expand its literature to include information on regional and statewide tourism. Fozo said part of the 3,000- square-foot center will be open 24 hours a day.There will be an automated hotel reservation system available. Milestone Construction Inc., of Syracuse, and architect Sam E.Leman Jr.have estimated the construction to take six months.Preliminary plans are for a grand opening of the center to be held in December.

United Way Campaign Exceeds Goal

The Kosciusko County United Way's 2004 campaign ended Thursday as board members revealed that $1,541,162 was raised to support the organization's partner agencies and programs.The celebration was held in Center Lake pavilion.The group again exceeded its goal, which was $1.525 million for 2004. The event began with the United Way annual meeting.Clare Baumgardt, board president, said Mike Kissane was leaving the board and thanked him for his years of service.Board members re-elected to a second term were David Findlay, Karen Dady and Dean Zentz.New nominees elected to the board were Greg Quinton, Ron Donkers, Christy Price and Joe Kingan. Baumgardt introduced David Findlay, the 2004 campaign chairman.He introduced the campaign cabinet members: Darlleen Shephard, Mark Minatel, Scott Smith and Denny Duncan.

County Relents On CCAC Funding

A new lineup of sorts among the Kosciusko County Commissioners led Tuesday to the first outward vote of support to assist the City-County Athletic Complex. Representatives of the CCAC, returning for the fourth consecutive year in hopes of receiving any type of financial support, proposed a one-time gift of $75,000. In past years, similar pitches had struck out, but two commissioners voted into office over the past two years made the difference this time. Commissioner Brad Jackson, vowing to stand by an earlier campaign pledge, proposed a one-time gift of $50,000.Avis Gunter supported the measure. Middle District Commissioner Eddie Creighton, whose district includes the multipurpose sports facility west of Warsaw, renewed his opposition in the 2-1 vote. Creighton said he remains philosophically opposed to using county funds for recreational purposes.
