County Delays Decision On Buying Voting Machines

County commissioners pushed back a decision to buy computerized voting machines by at least two weeks during their meeting Tuesday, after clerk Sharon Christner appeared before the board. Christner presented lease-purchase information for the "iVotronic Voting System," available through Election Systems & Software.She outlined a couple of plans, costing from $1.7 million to $1.8 million, to receive 229 units this summer. In each scenario, the touch-sensitive voting panels come with hardware, software and various degrees of technical support.The federal government will withhold certain funds if the system isn't installed by the next federal election. Christner said she wanted to get the system up and running so the public could be trained to use it. Commissioner Ron Truex asked what happened to the idea of ordering enough units for Warsaw's civic election. Christner said her calls to the company were returned just this week.

Triton Offers Kinder First Day

BOURBON - Triton High School students found a change in the usual first-day routine.according to principal Rick Dehne. "Usually, they come in and get their handbook and 'Here are the rules,' and they go on to the next teacher and it's the same thing," he said. According to Dehne, this year, doughnuts were ordered and time was provided for students to relax and catch up with classmates as well as deal with bar codes, schedule changes and other last-minute details. "We ought to celebrate these kids coming back," said Dehne. Kindergarten screening begins today at Triton Elementary School and will continue through Thursday.Incoming kindergartners will be screened to identify those who may need more time for language arts skills as candidates for the limited number of spots in the extended-day kindergarten.

10 Years Ago Heather Noelle Bryan and Zachary Dean-Wayne Golden competed in the Little Miss and Mister contest at the Indiana State Fair Aug. 14. The Kosciusko County kids placed seventh out of 42 represented counties. Bryan is the daughter of Jeff and Sheri Bryan, Winona Lake. She is a Jefferson Elementary School student. Golden is the son of Dean and Lora Golden, Warsaw. He is an Eisenhower Elementary School student. 25 Years Ago Cheri Tucker, Mentone, received the honor of having the best food display at the recent Kosciusko County Fair with her fifth-year foods project, crescent yeast rolls. She received a gift certificate from Tom Reyna and Mark Mayo. The Kroger Culinary Award is presented each year to one of the food displays from the grand champion, which represent Kosciusko County at the State Fair. Cheri is the daughter of Charles and Cara Tucker. 50 Years Ago Two outstanding students of area colleges returned to Winona Lake recently before going back to Indianapolis, where they are going to live. Glenn Baker, who graduated this year from North Manchester with the best grade point average of the class, will be going to Indiana University Medical Center. His wife, the former Who’s Who student at Grace College Jeanette Turner, will teach in a local school. 75 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Beyer, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Snorf and daughter, Suzanna, left for German Vally, Ill., to visit the former’s only brother, Dr. Albert Beyer, who is a retired Presbyterian minister. He is also founder of a college at German Vally, Ill.

Winona Mobile Home Park Gets Second Rezoning Continuance

WINONA LAKE - Jerry Smith just wants to get the most value for his Winona Lake property - and the town's plan commission is doing what it can to help. For the second time in two months, the commission tabled a planned rezoning of Smith's property at 2308 E.Winona Ave.The commission is considering rezoning Smith's property, which houses Smith's Mobile Home Park, from its current commercial zoning to residential.
