The depth of their research not only helped four Warsaw Community Schools students earn two awards at a national competition last week, but it also got them before politicians who could help them get a posthumous medal for a World War II veteran.
David E. Schumacher, 71, Clayton, N.C., passed away at his home June 11, 2017. He was born to Herman and Doris Schumacher on Dec. 25, 1945, in Onarga, Ill. David is survived by his loving and very devoted wife, Peggy Ann. David served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1970 in Germany and Vietnam. He spent most of his early years in Kosciusko County, working as an auto body repairman. Later, he spent many years as an over-the-road truck driver, driving coast to coast, which he enjoyed very much. Surviving along with his wife are two sons and a daughter: Steven Schumacher, Michael Schumacher and Anna Gwinnue, all of the Indianapolis area; two brothers and a sister: Robert Schumacher, North Carolina; Charles Schumacher, Warsaw; and Kathleen McClure, North Manchester; a stepson, Randy Carter, Clayton, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Robin Wise, Granger; and many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy, in 2013; his parents; and two brothers and a sister, Ray Schumacher, Paul Schumacher and Janet Boyack. Honoring David’s request, no funeral or burial services were planned. Cremations services were provided by Underwood Funeral Home, Smithfield, N.C. David E. Thomas Rhea "Tom" White, 79, Syracuse, passed away at 8:59 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2017, at his home. He was born Oct. 19, 1937, in Auburn, Ky., to Mendel Douglas and Mattie Penrod White. He graduated in 1956 from Kaiser High School, Dayton, Ohio, and was a United States Air Force veteran. He was raised in Dayton, moved to Goshen, and then to Syracuse in 1978. He was married on Sept. 19, 1987, in Syracuse, to Karen Sue Plank Noel Larimer.

NAPPANEE — A memorial service for Jean Ellen Mast is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Nappanee Missionary Church. Jean died May 31, 2017. Calling will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
