Panthers One Step From State

NAPPANEE - The 90-degree two-a-days of early August have come and gone, as have the mild Fridays of September and October. Now the only thing that separates Class 3A No.5 NorthWood from its fourth trip to the climate-controlled RCA Dome in Indianapolis are 48 minutes with sixth-ranked Zionsville in the bitter November air. The possibility of snow and near 20-degree temperatures doesn't seem to bother NorthWood football coach Rich Dodson, whose 11-2 Panthers host the Eagles (10-3) tonight at 7:30 for the right to play either top-ranked Heritage Hills (13-0) or No.9 Indianapolis Roncalli (10-3) next Saturday in the 3A state championship game. "We're not going to let the weather bother us," Dodson, owner of a 97-17 record in nine years at NorthWood, said."If lousy weather is an advantage for us, the lousier the better." One thing is for sure, if the weather is lousy, both teams would be more than happy to keep the ball on the ground.

Warsaw Girls Open Season With Win Over Valley

AKRON -ÊIf Friday night's girls basketball game between Warsaw and Tippecanoe Valley had a theme, it could be "missed opportunities." The Vikings had a chance to tie the score late in the game, but could not find the offense to do it.The Tigers could have put the game away in the second quarter, but a scoring drought prevented it. Warsaw held a 40-32 advantage after three quarters of play, and extended that lead to 42-32 when Natalie Chabot hit the first basket of the fourth frame. However, the Vikings slowly chipped away at Warsaw's lead by making a 6-0 run early in the final stanza.Tabitha Pratt converted a three-point play by sinking a free throw after good basket with 7:23 left in the game to make the score 42-35. Then Letitia Clauson hit a free throw to cut the deficit to six, 42-36. Pratt followed with another basket at the 6:42 mark to slice the Tiger lead to four points, 42-38.

Warsaw Wrestling Team Wins Tournament

Warsaw's wrestling team opened its season Saturday by hosting a six-team super dual. As a team, the Tigers came away undefeated with five victories on the day. Individually, Warsaw's Anthony Boley and Kris Hueber went undefeated, and Hueber received the "Outstanding Wrestler" award, based on votes of the coaches. Tippecanoe Valley went 1-4 and had a limited roster, falling three wrestlers short of a full fourteen-member team.Valley coach Scott Smith was pleased with his team's performance considering that in every round they had to give up as many as three forfeits. "In head-to-head competition we really did quite well," said Smith. Valley's Wes Ramsey went undefeated at 152 pounds, and the Viking team win came against Triton 42-33. Triton came away with two individual champions, Justin Scott (103) and Errik Lemler (125).The team had one win, against Eastside.
