Bell Library Moves Into New Facility

MENTONE - Light flows into the spacious confines of Mentone's Bell Memorial Public Library. "It's just like, wow," board of trustees president Cal Jackson said of the move from cramped quarters in the 2,670-square-foot block building at 306 Broadway to the former Frank Manufacturing building on the corner of Main Street and Broadway. Now patrons and staff have 8,131 square feet, including a second floor, in which to browse and work. Entering a building decorated in inviting natural colors, visitors are greeted by an open atrium with natural light from a row of second-story windows. Librarian Lorna Klein has plans for that space. "I'd love to see a scale model of a Bell helicopter there," she said. The old library was built with a $20,000 grant to the town from the estate of Lawrence D.Bell, Mentone native and famous aviator.Bell requested the money be used for a suitable memorial to his parents, Isaac and Harriet Sarber Bell.

'Y' Near Goal In Fund Drive

They're in the final stretch, and with a little luck, their goal will be reached before construction begins next month. The Kosciusko Community YMCA's capital campaign to finance a youth gymnasium, a fitness center and a warm water training pool is only $125,000 short, said Don Enterline, YMCA director. The total amount the facility's board needs to raise is $200,000, but $75,000 has been pledged by the Dekko Foundation, Enterline said. However, the $75,000 is a challenge grant, meaning the community must come up with $125,000 before Dekko will contribute the $75,000. The total cost of the project is more than $1.5 million, with all but $200,000 already raised, Enterline said.Construction is slated to begin May 1, and the goal is to open the new facilities by May 1998. The YMCA's expansion plans are the result of a rapidly growing membership. In 1990, the Y had 2,100 members; by 1996 the membership had more than doubled to 4,300.

CAFO Proponents in Denial

Editor, Times-Union: We have been in the state of trying to educate people about CAFOs since March. Letters to the editor were full of well-researched facts by independent organizations. These were not biased. Some were funded by charitable organizations. Scientists did the research and all came to the conclusion that we had a real problem with the CAFOs, the meat they produced and the manure they created. It was shown that the air around these facilities was hazardous to breath.
