Brothers Arrested In Connection With Pride Station Armed Robbery

Two brothers believed to be responsible for last week's armed robbery of Pride Gas Station, Syracuse, and multiple home burglaries were arrested around noon Wednesday. Russell W.Stidams Jr., 22, of 9832 Rock-A-Bye Road, Cromwell, and Christopher Wayne Stidams, 24, White Pigeon, Mich., were arrested in a gravel pit, south of Backwater Road, North Webster. The pair were found sleeping at the gravel pit, one inside a vehicle and one underneath a tree.They were "arrested without incident," Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department detective Travis Marsh said. "One second they were sleeping, the next they were in cuffs," Marsh said. The sheriff's department and Indiana State Police arrested the men after receiving anonymous tips and recovering stolen property specific to the crimes the men allegedly committed. One item, a bearded lizard stolen from a Warsaw residential burglary, was recovered.Items are believed to have been traded for money or drugs.

Pierceton PD Offers Security Survey

PIERCETON - Security surveys are being offered by the town's police officers, town marshal Tim Sammons told council members Monday. Continuing a campaign to introduce citizens and police officers to each other, Sammons said the program is offered at no charge. Each confidential survey will be taken by an officer.Recommendations, like trimming back shrubs, adding outside lighting or ensuring that all windows lock, will be offered to prevent theft and vandalism. Chip Hill, public works supervisor, said leaf pickup begins Monday.The schedule is: Mondays: south of Catholic Street and west of First Street; Wednesdays: south of Catholic Street and east of First Street; and Thursdays: north of Catholic Street. Hill said work in the street department office's kitchen continues with installation of new cabinets.

Zoll Faces 5-1/2 Years In Leesburg Robbery

If a plea agreement is accepted by Kosciusko Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed, Jeffrey R.Zoll of Warsaw will get a total of 5-1/2 years in prison for robbing a Leesburg bank in January and taking a pickup from a neighbor. Zoll, 40, pleaded guilty Thursday morning in Kosciusko Circuit Court to conspiracy to commit robbery, a Class C felony, and auto theft, a Class D felony.The presumptive terms for those offenses, respectively, are four years and 1-1/2 years and, by pleading guilty, the Kosciusko County prosecutor agreed to seek only that amount of prison time for Zoll. As a condition of the plea agreement, the prison term here would be ordered served consecutively to a 20-year sentence in Whitley Circuit Court, where Zoll was sentenced in June for robbing a South Whitley bank. Zoll's plea agreement has yet to be accepted by the court, but if it is, Reed will sentence Zoll during an 8:15 a.m.hearing Sept.18.

No New Burglaries In Past Two Weeks

Even though local police are receiving calls about suspicious people and vehicles in and around Warsaw, the number of burglaries in the area hasn't increased in the past two weeks, according to authorities. A string of residential break-ins that began in May stopped on August 26; none has occurred since then, said Captain Steve Foster of the Warsaw Police Department. "As of 8 a.m.Friday, there have been no additional thefts or burglaries as related to this guy," Foster said. Thirty-six burglaries so far have been reported since May.In almost every case a house in an upscale residential area was entered, often at night while the residents were asleep and often through an unlocked door or window.Only small, easily carried items, such as cash, wallets or jewelry, were stolen.

Gun At School Brings Arrest

AKRON -ÊTwo students were removed from Tippecanoe Valley High School for allegedly having an unloaded gun at the school. According to a press release from the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation and information from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, students and staff informed administrators that a student had a handgun in his locker at the high school Thursday. Jeremy Wayne Strayer, 17, of Akron, was arrested and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 4:31 p.m.Thursday for dangerous possession of a gun and theft/receiving stolen property.His bond was set at $5,000. Charges are pending against another 16-year-old student who reportedly was involved in the incident.The student's name has not been released. After receiving information about the gun, school administrators and school resource officer Josh Spangle located Stayer and searched his locker.

Zoll Pleads Guilty To Armed Robbery

COLUMBIA CITY - Jeffrey R.Zoll of Warsaw pleaded guilty Tuesday in Whitley Circuit Court to one count of armed robbery with a deadly weapon, a Class B felony, and one count of resisting law enforcement, a Class D felony. Zoll, 49, also was charged with theft, a Class D felony, after robbing the South Whitley branch of First Federal Savings Bank of Wabash on April 18. During the court hearing, Zoll admitted having a gun during the robbery and handing employees a sack in which to put the money. After robbing the bank, Zoll fled South Whitley on Ind.14 before being involved in a three-county high-speed chase that ended on Covington Road in Allen County.Zoll's vehicle was blocked in a driveway by several police cars, two of which Zoll reportedly rammed. Sentencing in this case is set for June 26 before Whitley Circuit Court Judge James Heuer.

Police Recover Guns Stolen In Burglary

Working on a tip from another police agency, Warsaw police on Tuesday recovered nine of 10 guns stolen during a March 29 burglary of the home of a conservation officer and arrested two men for the crime.The 10th gun is reportedly in the custody of authorities in New York. An unrelated arrest of a man in Whitley County led officers from the sheriff's department there to learn that a group of people the man knew allegedly had stolen guns in the trunk of a car in Warsaw.The two men arrested here Tuesday reportedly were staying at the Days Inn. Two brothers, Phillip Goodman, 23, of 3527 Lake City Highway #227, Warsaw, and Jeremy Lee Goodman, 20, of 418 Village Road, Pierceton, are being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on charges of burglary to a residence and theft from a residence.Bond will be set by the court during the men's initial hearing.

2 Held After Armed Robbery

NORTH WEBSTER - Two men are in the Kosciusko County Jail this morning after allegedly robbing an American Legion employee of a bank deposit, possibly at gunpoint. David Walter Hawthorne, 24, of 8264 N.Syracuse-Webster Road, Syracuse, and Ray James Skelton, 32, of 10 EMS D18 Lane, Syracuse, are each charged with armed robbery, a Class C felony.Both are being held without bond. According to Detective Sgt.Tom Brindle of the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, the first suspect was in custody 16 minutes after the 911 call came in at 9:57 p.m., and the second suspect was apprehended at 10:35 p.m. Hawthorne was located at his home and arrested without incident.Police said they also recovered part of the stolen money at Hawthorne's residence.Hawthorne was out on bond after a December arrest for burglary and theft.

Solid Waste Board Discusses County Cleanup

Kosciusko County residents will take part in Litter Clean-Up Days April 21-22, an event organizers hope will clean up county roadways and better represent local communities. During the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District meeting Tuesday, members of the board of directors agreed they would accept donations for the event and pass them along to proper collaborators.The project is still in development, and currently is acquiring signs and safety vests for all that participate. "This is a project we've been needing to do, and things are going well so far," Executive Director Sue Studebaker said."People are already beginning to pick up bags. "I hope that the cities and towns can all work together over this weekend and really get things accomplished."
