Senior Rules For Wawasee

SYRACUSE - Hoosier Hysteria came four days early as the No.8 (3A) Wawasee Warriors defended their home block in a 63-50 win over county rival Tippecanoe Valley on senior night Friday. With a Hardwood Tepee packed chalk full of rabid fans of both teams, the two squads got a taste of what sectional play, which starts Tuesday for both teams, will be like. Wawasee senior John Adams picked up his first start of the season as he and fellow upperclassmen Michael Conrad were honored before the game. Conrad ended his Wawasee home career in style as he scored a team-high 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting while pulling down five rebounds to lead the Warriors to victory. Conrad scored seven points in the third quarter as Wawasee extended its lead to 42-34. The Warriors were effective with their passing and dribble penetration and played with patience as they forced Valley to play a slow-down game instead of the Vikings' up-and-down pace.

Griggs Scores Career High, Tigers Win Fifth Straight

If only every night were senior night for Warsaw's Adam Griggs. Everybody, the 6-foot-5 Warsaw senior said Friday night, wants to come out and explode on senior night. Griggs certainly did, scoring a career-high 30 points and leading the Warsaw varsity boys basketball team to a 69-50 win over visiting Huntington North in the final regular season game in the Tiger Den. "I was pretty pumped up," said Griggs, who was the first Tiger boys cager to score 30 in a game since Jerad Shaw netted 38 at Elkhart Memorial's North Side Gym two years ago."My teammates did a good job getting me the ball.I was feeling it early.Everybody wants to come out and explode on senior night, and my teammates did a good job getting me the ball." Griggs, whose previous high was 26 in a conference win at Northridge earlier this season, finished the game 11 of 16 from the field, 4 of 5 from three-point range, and converted all four of his free throw attempts.

Tigers Storm Back, Advance To Title Tilt

DUNLAP - As quickly as weather changes in northern Indiana, so did the momentum in Friday's Concord 4A Sectional girls basketball game between Warsaw and East Noble. While snow was falling outside, inside it was raining Hilary O'Connell three-pointers. The 5'8" sophomore guard connected on 3 of 3 shots from beyond the arc in the third quarter, fueling a 19-6 Warsaw run with 11 points. O'Connell finished with a game-high 21 points, as Warsaw finished East Noble's season with a 52-42 decision. Warsaw improves to 13-9 on the season and will play Goshen tonight in the sectional championship.Goshen advanced by beating Elkhart Central 51-49.The Tigers trounced Goshen 71-43 earlier in the season. The Knights end their season with a 14-9 record. The Tigers led 11-10 after one quarter of play, but trailed 26-18 at halftime despite going to the charity stripe nearly 20 times.

Warriors Knock Off Top-Ranked Vikings

SYRACUSE -ÊAll in all it's been a pretty good week for the Wawasee boys basketball team.Tuesday night the Warriors knocked off 4A No.3 Columbia City 52-46.They followed that up with a 54-49 win over the top-ranked in 3A Valley Vikings Friday night. Those rankings are just numbers to head coach Phil Mishler. "The rankings are for the media," said Mishler after the game."We're not concerned with that." That may be the case, but with two big times wins to advance Wawasee's record to 16-4 the media and those who read newspapers and listen to radio are going to notice the Warriors. The excitement was palpable in the Warrior gym and most were expecting a close game.In the first half it seemed as though Wawasee wasn't going to cooperate and run away with it. The Warriors jumped out to a 23-11 lead after one quarter. Wawasee was hot with a capital 'H' in the first half.

Warriors Avenge Loss, End Valley's Season

NAPPANEE - With a packed house of 3,600-plus in "The Pit" at NorthWood High School, it was Hoosier Hysteria personified as Tippecanoe Valley and Wawasee locked horns for the second time this season in the second game of the 3A regional Saturday. While the Vikings got the best of their Kosciusko County foes in both teams' regular season finale, the Warriors ended Valley's tourney run with a 73-63 win. Despite a career-best performance by senior John Gibson, the Vikings couldn't overcome turnovers and foul trouble. Both teams slogged through a 32-minute contest where 51 fouls were called and 29 turnovers were committed. It was the Vikings who took advantage of the tight officiating in the early going.Gibson was 9 of 10 from the line in the first half as the senior guard took advantage of mismatches with Wawasee's Andrew Mock and a hobbled Kory Lantz, who was playing with a severe knee injury suffered in last week's sectional final.

Maierle Leads Locals At Goshen Sectional

GOSHEN - After his first two attempts, it was unclear if Warsaw senior J.W.Maierle would qualify for the finals in the long jump at Thursday's Goshen Sectional. He qualified for the finals with his third and final attempt, putting scratches on his first two jumps behind him, and then came out of the finals as the sectional champion. "I scratched on my first two jumps," said Maierle, who entered Thursday's competition as the No.1 seed."I felt like I was in elementary school, I kept looking at the board. On the third jump I put it all together for a good jump." On his second of three jumps in the finals, Maierle leaped 21 feet, 9.5 inches, a distance good enough to win the sectional championship by nine inches. Maierle, who later anchored the winning 400 relay team for the Tigers, said the cold and wind had an effect on the competition.

Braddock Beats Buzzer, Tiger Boys Beat NLC Foe Northridge

MIDDLEBURY - Wanting a chance to redeem himself, Warsaw senior Todd Braddock got it and made the most of it Friday. After struggling to find his shooting touch at the charity stripe, Braddock cashed in a full-court pass from teammate Adam Griggs with a bank shot in the lane to beat the buzzer as Warsaw came from 11 points down to knock off Northern Lakes Conference foe Northridge 49-47 in front of a nearly-packed gym in Middlebury. Six-foot-9 Northridge junior Ronnie Thomas missed a free throw opportunity with 2:00 remaining in the game, and Braddock collected the rebound for the Tigers.Warsaw junior point guard Michael Moore, who missed a shot to tie the game with Plymouth last Saturday in the NLC Holiday Tournament championship game, knotted the game at 47 with 53 ticks on the clock.

Squires Track Season Inspired By A Squall

Two weeks into the track and field season, Manchester coach Casey McDowell sat his team down and had his guys watch the movie "White Squall." The storyline: A group of kids went down to Key West on a big boat - a high adventure voyage. On the deck of the boat written was, 'Where we go one, we go all.' McDowell hoped his guys got that message. They did. Manchester won its first sectional team title in school history under the 25-year-old McDowell, who's in his first year as head coach. "The guys, they've taken that message more to heart than I thought they would," McDowell said."They knew why I wanted them to watch that. "I wanted them to know they had to be around the track backing each other. In teams I had been with in the past, the distance guys were hardly ever around the sprint guys.I wanted to make them feel everybody was everybody.

St. Anne's Volunteers Rehab Condemned House

Volunteers and members of St.Anne's Episcopal Church; Bill Newland, president of the St.Anne's Men's Club; Gary Lion and Dan Kuhn decided they wanted to help the Warsaw Community. The volunteer group is cleaning up and remodeling a house at 751 W.Market St. "It all started when Bill Newland took over as the new guy at St.Anne's Episcopal Church Men's Club," Dan Kuhn, member and volunteer, said."We've always done a lot of things for the community and the whole church has always had an emphasis on doing things for the community." Kuhn said when Newland took over "he ran through a list of the kinds of things that the church has done and the Men's Club has done." Newland said: "It's time to do something bigger." So the small group of volunteers "kicked around some ideas, like getting involved with a Habitat (for Humanity) house," Kuhn said.

Tigers Too Much For Wildcats

SOUTH WHITLEY - An apparent blowout turned into a pretty good game Friday in South Whitley.

Tiger Defense Short-Circuits Valpo Offense

VALPARAISO - If Warsaw's basketball team were a football team, the Tigers' defense would probably have a nickname by now. But people don't hang nicknames on basketball defenses like they do football defenses. Two Saturdays ago, Columbia City scored six points in the second and third quarters combined against Warsaw. This past Saturday, Valparaiso (3-1) mustered only 11 points in the second half as the Tigers (4-0) won 58-34. "Geez, what did we get, 11 points in the second half?" Valparaiso coach Bob Punter said."You're not going to win any games with that kind of output." No, and with the loss, Warsaw snapped the Vikings' home winning streak, dating back to the 1996-1997 season, at 15.Six-foot-6 junior center Zach Nelson hit 9 of 14 field goals and led Warsaw with 22 points and eight rebounds.Senior point guard Rob Kesler added 14 points.

We have a garden every year and this year we have probably one of the best gardens we have ever had.Every Monday evening after I read Ann Coulter's column, I cut it out of the editorial page and shred it and then spread it on my garden. All that BS from the "Wicked Witch of the Press" has been enough to fertilize it better than any Miracle Grow ever could. I am a very long-time subscriber to the Times-Union and find her column really good at improving my very low blood pressure.
