Last-Minute Wondergoal Sends Grace To Title Game

The “Cardiac Kids” struck again on Saturday for Grace College’s men’s soccer team. Marcelo Talamas sent the Lancers to the Crossroads League Tournament finals with a bicycle kick goal in the 89th minute, electrifying the 1st Source Bank Field crowd. The Lancers struck twice in the second half to beat Goshen 2-1 in the tournament semifinals, continuing what has become a magical season for Grace. Grace will travel to No. 21 Spring Arbor on Nov. 11 for the championship game. With a win at Spring Arbor, Grace would earn its second trip in program history to the NAIA National Championships.

Lancers Run In Conference Race

Grace’s cross country team enjoyed the pinnacle of its season with the 2017 Crossroads League Championships on Saturday. The men’s team placed sixth out of 10 teams, and the women were ninth. Sam Hall led Grace’s team. He finished in 21st place in a time of 27:24. Elijah Brooks had a personal-best time of 27:37, and Ben Rankin was 15 seconds behind him. Drew Jones’s 28:12 was fourth for Grace, Brendan Hamilton finished in 28:34, and John Marhefka (29:01) and Matt Halbakken (29:03) were in a tight pack. Tim Drew was the final runner for Grace.

High-Octane Lancers Race Past Governors State

Grace College’s men’s basketball team wrapped up a perfect weekend with a 92-83 victory over Governors State on Saturday. Matt Jennings enjoyed a breakout game with 23 points to lead all players, and Erik Bowen, who was named the Tournament MVP, scored 20 points with four rebounds. The first half was an offensive barrage with the teams combining for 101 points. GSU jumped ahead early 10-3 thanks to two early 3-pointers. Grace battled back to tie the game at 14-14, and the score remained close for the rest of the half. Late in the half, Grace fell behind 45-40 before rallying with a late charge. Jennings scored in the paint, then forced a turnover to free up Haden Deaton for an emphatic fastbreak dunk.

Janet Aileen McCrystal

Janet Aileen McCrystal, 91, passed away Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017, at Valley Hi Nursing Home, Woodstock, Ill.  She was born on July 28, 1926, in Sterling, Ill. Janet grew up in Sterling and graduated from Sterling High School. After high school, she attended and graduated from Swedish-American Hospital in Rockford, Ill. Janet worked at Caterpillar for the majority of her career as an  occupational health nurse. Janet Swartley married Donald McCrystal in 1950 in Rockford. After marrying, Janet and Donald moved to Aurora, Ill. They were happily married for 42 years.  Janet is survived by three of her four children: Patrick (Patricia) McCrystal, Janel (Don) Buchner and Teri (Scott) Lewis; along with seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Janet was preceded in death by her daughter, Diane McCrystal, and husband, Donald McCrystal. Don, Janet and their family were longtime summer residents at Tippecanoe Lake, and her daughter, son-in-law and grandsons and their families are still enjoying summers at the lake.  The family is planning a private funeral service and burial to follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Aurora.   ***** Memorials to Woodstock Hospice CareCenter, 527 W.
