10 Years AgoLocal paint horse youth competitor Katie Kemper, 13, of Claypool, captured a World Championship title on June 23 at the 2003 World Championship Paint Horse Show, held June 21 through July 5 in Fort Worth, Texas. Approximately 2,000 horses competed in this year’s show. Katie and her horse, Dupont, also picked up their award for being 10th in the nation for the 13 and under division for 2002. She is under the guidance of Walters Equestrian Center in Bourbon. Katie is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ben Kemper and will be attending Edgewood Middle School.25 Years AgoDebbie Ransbottom was crowned Miss Silver Lake during last weekend’s Silver Lake Days annual festivities. Glenn Wagner and Carl Wendel, owners of W & W Truck Sales Inc., U.S. 30 west of Warsaw, have signed a contract with Ernest (Pat) Kelly, representative for the radio stations, to bring listeners all the action as a public service. Both Wagner and Wendel have spent more than 20 years connected with the trucking industry. Their many years of experience as drivers and operators before purchasing their present business eight years ago has been an asset in servicing their customers.  75 Years AgoWarsaw Policeman Judd Pittenger and Ivan Ginn took into custody Sherwood Kimes, of Gary, Ind., shoe store clerk, and within 20 minutes, found that he had stolen an automobile in Valparaiso early yesterday and was wanted for theft of $200 from his employer’s store in Gary. Officers from Valparaiso took Kimes back to Valparaiso to face a vehicle-taking charge. He had stolen a car from a local Ford dealer there, drove to Warsaw, and ran out of gas on North Lake Street and applied to the American Legion for a loan of $3, leaving the key as security. Warsaw police found him inebriated and walking on East Center Street near Scott Street, leaving town on foot. On Sunday, he had used his store key to enter the R. and S. Shoe Store in Gary. Manager Abe Shoen called the police. None of the money was found on Kimes. The abandoned car was returned to its owner.

Formerly housing Sym Financial, the owners of the old brick house on Center Street near the Wagon Wheel Playhouse have opted to open a hotel, “White Hill Manor,” because of its spaciousness. The house, of English architectural style, was built in 1934 by Zimmer Inc. founder J. O. Zimmer and purchased by Frank Saemann in the 1950s. “We want to restore the house to its structural origin,” says co-owner Brent Wilcoxson. The walls of the game room once had the names of Zimmer’s guests burned into the wood. Jeanne plans to attend Ball State Teachers College in Muncie; Tony will pursue a degree in law at Notre Dame; Martha plans to attend Wheaton College 75 Years AgoThe City Council unanimously approved the plan of the Board of Public Works to submit additional WPA projects for Warsaw to J.M. Hixon, South Bend, regional director for street work. According to blueprints submitted by city engineer Don H. Lessig, nine miles of unpaved streets on which curb, guttering, and a black-top pavement would be laid, would be improved; two miles of alleys in the business district would be paved; and eight blocks of new streets would be opened and graded. Provision is made for widening several brick streets through the business district; Main from Buffalo to Detroit, Market from Lake to Indiana, and Buffalo from Jefferson to Main. Estimates on cost of materials total $168,214.77.

Demaris Black, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Black, North Webster, received a scholarship to Spencer College, a business school in New Orleans, La. She graduated from North Webster High School this spring and received the scholarship on the merits of her ranking in commercial subjects.
