10 Years Ago Tippecanoe Valley High School senior Tabitha Pratt was recently named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State Team for the 2002 season. Pratt, who ranks first in her class with an 11.4 grade point average on a 12.0 scale, was among 25 girls basketball players in the state to receive the honor. To be eligible for the award, a player must have started in 90 percent of the games and scored at least 1000 on the SAT. 25 Years Ago The winners in the Women’s Christian Temperance Union poster contest are, from Washington Elementary School: Amy LaRose, the overall winner; and Rick Dilling, second place; representing Atwood School were: Amanda Keele, first, and Jeremy Marsh, second; from Claypool School are: Ryan Hively, first, and Jason Shepherd, second; from Leesburg School: Jim Rose, second; Lincoln School: Theresa Sue Finley, first; Silver Lake: Kyle Prater, second; and Madison School: Shanda Ward, first, and Jennifer Garrett, second. 50 Years Ago Personal sentimental possessions of the late Lawrence Bell, famous aircraft pioneer, have arrived in his native town of Mentone, and it is planned to put them on display. There are many scale models of planes, including fixed wing, rotary and experimental types. The display also includes trophies and citations, including the Collier and Thompson trophies, as well as jet motors and Mr. Bell’s personal diary. Most of the items are in huge glass cases. 75 Years Ago Otho Winger, president of Manchester College of North Manchester, announced future plans of the institution to erect three new buildings. Additions will be a women’s gymnasium and skating rink, a fine arts building, and an indoor swimming pool. The date of construction was not definitely announced. At the college are the following Warsawans: Marilyn Brown, Donna Jean Mowery, Mildred Sloan, Eugene Bailey, Reed Dubois, Rowan Howe, Jim Pottenger, Meta Gatke, Madelyn Gatke, Blaine Mikesell, Jud Lytle and Evelyn Ettinger.

10 Years Ago At a recent annual meeting of CASA of Kosciusko County, Henrietta Bumgardner was named the Child Advocate of the Year for her dedication to abused and neglected children. In the four years Bumgardner has served as an advocate, she has volunteered nearly 2,500 hours researching materials, conducting interviews, attending court hearings and listening to “her” children. Bumgardner also works full time at R.R. Donnelley & Sons. 25 Years Ago This recipe was a first-place winner in the Spotlight Foreign Recipe contest for French Baked Brie in Phyllo 1/4 cup apricot preserves; 1 round wheel of Brie; 10 sheets phyllo dough; 1/2 cup butter, melted. Spread preserves on top of Brie. Wrap Brie in thawed phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with melted butter. Cover and refrigerate. Before serving, place cheese in shallow baking pan. Bake 425 degrees 8-12 minutes or until golden. Let stand 10 minutes. Serve with cracker. Cathy Suchecki, Warsaw 50 Years Ago Syd Martin and Tim Weidman, members of the Warsaw High School Rocket Club, displayed the various types of rockets the 10 members of the club plan to launch May 6 at the Dick Whitesell farm three miles northeast of Warsaw. The club plans to launch 10 rockets, all equipped with recovery apparatus with a vapor generator installed in the nose, whereby vapor will be expelled. Seven of the rockets will be equipped with parachutes, and one will contain a radio. 75 Years Ago Adolph Moore, who has been employed as one of the operators at the Buffalo Street tower of the Pennsylvania railroad, has been transferred to the tower at Washington Street. Mrs. Bruce Howe, Mrs. A.C. Brown, Mrs. Walter C. Cansdale, Mrs. E. Adamson of Winona Lake, and Mrs. Lafler, of Warsaw, attended a two-day session of the Fort Wayne Presbytery April 1 and 2 at Auburn.
