Pierceton PD Offers Security Survey

PIERCETON - Security surveys are being offered by the town's police officers, town marshal Tim Sammons told council members Monday. Continuing a campaign to introduce citizens and police officers to each other, Sammons said the program is offered at no charge. Each confidential survey will be taken by an officer.Recommendations, like trimming back shrubs, adding outside lighting or ensuring that all windows lock, will be offered to prevent theft and vandalism. Chip Hill, public works supervisor, said leaf pickup begins Monday.The schedule is: Mondays: south of Catholic Street and west of First Street; Wednesdays: south of Catholic Street and east of First Street; and Thursdays: north of Catholic Street. Hill said work in the street department office's kitchen continues with installation of new cabinets.

Conservative Values Motivate Souder

Mark Souder's conservative values and religious beliefs are a motivation in why he is running for the third district Congressional seat. "I grew up in a strong conservative home and those principles that were instilled in me at a young age have been a part of my campaign," Souder said. Souder, 56, of Fort Wayne, said he is pro-life and believes in traditional marriage. Souder faces candidate Tom Hayhurst in the Nov.7 election. Souder first served four terms representing Indiana's Fourth Congressional District.Since 2002, he has represented Indiana's Third Congressional District. "This race will decide who will provide direction in Congress and instill the conservative values in Indiana residents that have been an important part of my life," Souder said. Souder said he is a senior member of the Homeland Security committee, border subcommittee member, intelligence committee member and chair of the Indiana Narcotics committee.

Bourbon Council Creates Storm Water Utility

BOURBON - "We have created the vehicle for both the Center Street and Ind.331 projects if we need it," said town council president Bill Keyser as he signed an ordinance Tuesday creating a storm water utility for the town. Council members have worked several years searching for funding to reconstruct sewer, storm drainage and water service and have yet to secure any funding for the work.They are awaiting word from state officials concerning possible funding for the Center Street reconstruction project; the creation of this utility was an effort to comply with requirements.State officials promised word on the application by mid-October. The council approved a survey to determine the percentage of low- to moderate-income households in town.The work, costing $1,350, will be done by Ball State University. Consultant John Hughes told the board the updated survey would provide necessary information for various programs.
