Valley Grapplers Pin Rival Squires

AKRON - Manchester and Tippecanoe Valley met in a Three Rivers Conference wrestling dual at Valley, with the Vikings coming out on top 36-33 Monday evening. Both teams are young, and both teams came to the event with identical records of 0-6. Only nine matches were wrestled. Manchester received a forfeit at 112 pounds and then sent junior Austin Pence (119) against Valley's Robert Bauters, a freshman.In a minute and fifteen seconds it was over, with Pence recording a fall to put the Squires on top 6-0. Manchester added a victory at 125 pounds when Travis Wood battled back from a 4-1 deficit to grab a 10-9 victory over Tony Landry and the team score stood at 15-0. Valley won the next four matches to move into the lead. Viking freshman Kyle Horn (130) stuck Rick Morgan in 25 seconds, and then A.J.Austin (135) pinned Manchester's Kyle Coffey in 1:43.Elijoe Yoder (140) added six to the Valley team score, winning by injury default over Chance Shockey.

Vikes Strike Quick In 35-21 Win

RUSSIAVILLE - Tippecanoe Valley and Western owned identical 5-4 records entering Friday's Class 3A sectional football game, but the Vikings took control early with a 28-0 lead before halftime and went on to win 35-21. Valley, 6-4, hosts No.4 Norwell Friday.Norwell, 9-1, beat No.6 Rochester (8-2) 17-14. Valley scored on its first four possessions of the game. The Vikings opened the game with a 14-play, 66-yard drive that ended on a 5-yard touchdown run by Nathan Patterson.The Vikings established control at the line of scrimmage early, converting two fourth-down, short-yardage situations on running plays on the opening drive.Valley ran the ball six straight times for an average of six yards during the drive. "We gambled a little bit there," Valley coach Scott Bibler said of the fourth-down plays.

Two Local Players To Compete In All-Star Game

The South Bend All-Star game, which features All-Area boys basketball players against All-Metro players, takes place tonight. Of the 17 All-Area players, only three are from local teams: Warsaw junior guard Chris Wiggins, Triton senior Matt Savill and NorthWood senior forward Darin Nunemaker. Players from the South Bend/Elkhart area comprise the All-Metro team. The game starts at 7 p.m.at Bethel College's Wiekamp Center. Wiggins is one of six All-Area players who cannot play in the game.Underclassmen may be selected but are ineligible to play. The 6-foot-4 Wiggins delivered in every category for the Tigers, averaging 14.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game.He led the team in scoring and steals.He shot 51 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free-throw line.He hit 41 percent of his three-pointers. Nunemaker turned in statistics nearly identical to Wiggins.
