Warsaw Runs Past Whitko 85-65

SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊWhen the Whitko and Warsaw girls basketball teams met in South Whitley Tuesday night, the 12-5 Tigers were favorites over the 4-11 Wildcats.Warsaw did defeat Whitko 85-65, but the surprising part of the game was the reaction of the coaches after the game. Although the Tigers won by 20 points, coach Will Wienhorst saw many problems with his team's performance. "We won but 20 points, but we did not play well as a team," said Wienhorst."We did not come out well.We could not get the ball where we wanted to go.But I give Whitko a lot of credit, they came to play." Conversely, the Wildcats lost by 20 points, but coach Mike Sands was pleased with his team's performance.

Squires Falter At Home Against TV

NORTH MANCHESTER - In a high school boys basketball coaching career that has spanned 30-plus years, Bill Patrick has always been known to get the most out of what he has. In a 68-61 come-from-behind win at Three Rivers Conference rival Manchester Friday night, Patrick got the most out of his players, one in particular. After going through much of the season with a set-in-stone lineup, the third-year Tippecanoe Valley coach shuffled his starting lineup last night. The silver-haired, old school whip-cracker said he felt 5-foot-10 senior guard Drew Shafer was best suited coming off the bench. Patrick couldn't have been more right. In a win that upped Valley's overall season record to 10-4 and its TRC record to 4-1, six-foot junior Brandon Harmon got the start, but it was Shafer who came off the bench and scored 17 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, when he hit three crucial three-pointers and two vital free throws.

Krom Cans Vikings

WABASH - Before the basketball season began, Tippecanoe Valley coach Gregg Sciarra called Northfield the team to beat in the Three Rivers Conference. Before the season began, Northfield coach Chris Keisling considered Valley the one team standing between his team and the TRC title. The two teams met Tuesday night, and the game lived up to the hype.Northfield beat Valley 60-58 on a buzzer-beater shot under the basket by 6-foot-7 senior center Dewayne Krom. Valley fell to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the TRC.Northfield improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the TRC.The Norsemen control their own destiny in the conference with just two TRC games left, Rochester and Manchester.Every TRC team has at least one loss. Valley changed its lineup and defense for this game.

Warsaw Girls Lose Second Straight

NAPPANEE - Much like the last time the varsity girls basketball teams from Northern Lakes Conference rivals Warsaw and NorthWood battled, one team made the big plays when it neeed to in the second half to win. This time, however, it wasn't the Tigers, as host NorthWood erased a seven-point Warsaw lead in the fourth quarter and pulled out a 49-41 win Saturday night at the Panther Pit. NorthWood led Warsaw by 12 at halftime of their meeting Dec.28 in the first round of the NLC Tournament, only to have the Tigers fight back and win 60-45. In that conference tournament win, Warsaw junior point guard Julie Seiss set a Warsaw Community High School record by scoring 18 points in a single quarter. In Saturday night's game at NorthWood, however, the Tigers as a team only scored 18 points in the second half.Comparatively speaking, the Panthers scored 22 points in the fourth quarter en route to their fifth consecutive win.

Tigers To Play 2,000th Game

As the old saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day. While most area basketball fans know of the success Al Rhodes had during the 1980s and '90s and up through 2002, the Warsaw Tiger boys basketball program has come a long way since C.J.Roberts coached the school's first game in 1919. It is arguably one of the most successful and respected programs in the state, and Saturday at Marion, also one of the most respected high school boys basketball institutions in Hoosierland, the Tigers will play their 2,000th career game. Since their first game in 1919, a 42-15 loss to Elkhart, the Tigers have provided the community with a number of basketball memories - memories that many fans still recall today.

20 Years Later, Warsaw's '81 Team Will Receive Rings

This summer Warsaw junior varsity basketball coach Doug Ogle showed former Warsaw basketball player Dan Wray his ring the basketball program provided for reaching the semistate finals. Wray thought back to 1992 and the time he and John Snyder, then both members of the Warsaw coaching staff, talked about how they never received their rings for being state runners-up in 1981. Al Rhodes' first year as Warsaw's varsity boys basketball coach was 1981.He didn't do it that year, but every year after that his team made the final four, he gave players, managers, coaches and others associated with the team rings for their efforts.Last year's team lost at semistate, but under the current class system, Rhodes refers to the team as a final four team.

Whitko Girls Upset Warsaw 42-41

SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊWhen the basketball left Tisha Rowland's hands with 2.0 seconds left in the fourth quarter, everyone in the gym knew it would sail through the net to give Whitko a 42-41 lead over Warsaw. "When I saw the ball on the way out of her hands, I knew it was going in," said Whitko coach Ray Davis. With 2.0 seconds on the clock, Warsaw inbounded the ball with a cross-court pass to Katie Elliott, who tossed a shot toward the goal as the buzzer sounded. As the ball bounced off the rim, Whitko celebrated its first win over Warsaw since 1982, and just the second win over the Tigers in school history, 42-41. After one quarter of play, the Tigers held a slim 11-9 lead, but the Wildcats tied the score at 11 just one minute into the second frame. Warsaw then took an 18-11 lead with nearly four minutes left in the half.

Warsaw Wrestlers Win Sectional

Somewhat battered and bruised, the Warsaw wrestling team still put together a gutsy performance in claiming its second straight Warsaw Sectional title Saturday at the Tiger Den. The Tigers entered the sectional without the services of 103-pounder Scott Snyder, who has a broken hand suffered against Goshen. Then Warsaw lost Greg Patrick (130), who suffered a concussion in a loss to Triton's Josh Hooley in the first round. That put Warsaw without two of its best wrestlers heading into the championship and consolation finals. The place where precious points toward the team championship are earned.Snyder and Patrick sported a combined record of 43-13 on the season. Despite the setbacks, the Tigers put together a display of desire and guts in the finals and came up with eight individual champions, holding off Northern Lakes Conference-rival Plymouth 223-198 1/2.Triton was third with 84, and Valley was fourth with 44.

'Ridge Runs Past Wawasee, Warsaw

SYRACUSE - After sitting closer to the bottom of the Northern Lakes Conference than the top, making the move back up takes time.It can't be done in one big leap. Warsaw's path in girls track has been filled with some frustration and success, but it has been a slow trek. But the gap does seem to be closing. Northridge won the Northern Lakes Conference triangular meet with 72 points.Wawasee had 48 and Warsaw 36 Thursday. "We have a very young team, but we are closing the gap surely and steadily," Warsaw coach Doug Ogle said."We are looking forward to the (NLC) conference meet Tuesday." Wawasee has been the class of the conference for a few years and with that, a thorn in Warsaw's side.Although this year's Warrior squad may not be as outstanding as in years past, it marks improvement for the Tigers to come as close as they did.

Hueber Will Wrestle 'Down Under' In July

With a 33-4 record this past season, Warsaw Community High School wrestler Kris Hueber didn't spend much time on the down side of things. But going down under is exactly what the 17-year-old junior plans to do the first week of July. Hueber, who also plays inside linebacker for Phil Jensen's football team and participates on Troy Akers' track team, was selected to represent the U.S.in the 2000 Down Under International Games in Australia. While there, other than taking in the sights of the country known as the "Land Down Under," Hueber will grapple with athletes from around the world. "There's more than one team from Indiana," Hueber said."Other states take people and there's people from other countries. It's a big international thing." Warsaw wrestling coach Tony Boley said senior Joey Navarro and sophomore Anthony Boley also received invitations but prior commitments would not allow them to go.

Wawasee's Burke's Blasts Sink Warsaw

Some baseball players can get hot for a week or two and beat a team by themselves with their bat.Chicago's Sammy Sosa has done this before. So has Oakland's Mark McGwire.Eddie Murray did it in his heyday with the Baltimore Orioles. "Carrying a team on your back," is the phrase you hear when this happens. The Wawasee Warrior baseball team borrowed Rob Burke's back Wednesday evening. The right-handed hitting senior homered in the seventh and eighth innings to lift Wawasee to an 8-4 win in eight innings over Warsaw at Tiger Field. His solo homer with none out in the seventh tied the game at 4-4.His three-run homer in the eighth gave the Warriors the cushion they needed at 8-4. Both homers went over the left-field fence, which is 350 feet away. Has he had a game like this before, Wawasee coach John Blunk? "Well, not like this," Blunk said."Tuesday he had two triples and knocked in two runs.We don't usually hit home runs.

The Warriors Begin Building With 20-0 Win

SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊThe Wawasee football team wears T-shirts bearing the phrase "BUILDING A TRADITION" across the back. The Warriors took a leap toward their ultimate goal Friday night when they defeated the Whitko Wildcats 20-0. After a turnover, an interception and several punts led to a first-half stalemate, the Whitko Wildcats stayed in the lockerroom a little too long and earned an 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to start the second half. The Whitko third quarter went downhill from there. Seth Slater gained 10 yards for the Wildcats on the first play of the quarter but fumbled to give Wawasee possession of the football on the Whitko 45-yard-line with 11:45 still remaining in the third.

Eagles Chill Tigers

The trend held true. In the war known as the Columbia City-Warsaw girls' basketball rivalry, the team that wins the regular season battle and enters the sectional as the more experienced, higher-regarded team is the one that tends to come out as the loser in the postseason. The Eagles, with only two starters back from last year, avenged a pair of one-point losses to the Tigers (58-57 in last year's sectional and 45-44 in this year's regular season) with a 54-39 win in the semifinals of the Warsaw Sectional Thursday. With four starters back from last year's sectional championship team, it was Warsaw that was expecting big things this year and with a young team, it was Columbia City that looked to be rebuilding this season. That fits the profile to a tee.

Second Title Is Sweet For Valley

PLYMOUTHÊ-ÊThe first time is sweet, but the second time is sweeter - just ask the Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team, which won the Plymouth Sectional by defeating the host Pilgrims 56-41 Saturday night. "This time it's better because I think we are ready to do more," said Viking junior Rebekah Parker."Last year was our first, but now we want more." "It feels a lot better this year," said Valley senior Sherise Denny."We really wanted to beat Plymouth again, we wanted to get them.It just feels great." And Denny had good reason to feel great. She caught fire in the first half, hitting 5 of 6 baskets, including a perfect 4 of 4 three-pointers. The Vikings struck early as Parker scored the first basket of the game. However, Plymouth fired back to tie the score at 2-all. Enter Denny.

Viking Comeback Falls Short In Sectional Final

PERU - The Tippecanoe Valley Vikings girls basketball team overcame a 12-point deficit to start the fourth quarter and nearly pulled out a win in the Peru sectional final, but fell to Norwell in a 71-70 thriller at Peru High School's Tig-Arena Saturday night. The Vikings started the game as slowly as the Knights did fast.Norwell charged out of the gates and jumped out to a 15-0 lead with 4:01 left in the first quarter. Valley battled back and took its first and only lead of the game when sophomore Chelsy Rhoades hit a three-pointer from deep in the left-hand corner to put the Vikings ahead at 70-69. The Knights raced down the court and Mackenzie Warwick drew a foul from Valley's Rachel Sitts with the Vikings in the double bonus.Warwick was true on both attempts from the charity stripe to regain the lead for the Knights at 71-70.

Golf Disaster Begins Before Tragedy Strikes

I have been a little disconcerted lately about the stuff I normally write about. You know, the usual suspects - prisoner abuse, a retaliatory beheading, huge federal deficits, a nastily partisan presidential campaign, soaring gas prices. In the news business, one is always immersed in, well, news.CNN is on all the time in the newsroom. And these days, the news just doesn't seem to be all that bright. I don't think it's a case of looking at the glass half full or half empty, either. The whole Iraq mess makes things look a tad bit bleak. So when things seem bleak, it's time to do something fun. It's time for a diversion.I have a couple diversions. One is music. The other is golf. So Wednesday afternoon I took off a little early and headed to Maxwelton Golf Club. There is a Wednesday game there. It's kind of intimidating for me because the guys in the Wednesday game are good.

Valley Win Streak Hits 10

AKRON -ÊAll good things must end, and Saturday night the Triton Trojans learned that the hard way. For the Trojans, the good thing was their five-game win streak. And the end was caused by the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings. The Vikings defeated the Trojans 70-61 Saturday night in Akron. The win marks Valley's 10th consecutive win, and this is the first time the Vikings have beat Triton in three years. Triton struck first offensively in this matchup of streaking teams. However, Valley was not down for long.Triton's Brandon Zeider hit 1 of 2 free throws to start the game and give the Trojans a 1-0 advantages. Then Valley moved down the court and Noah Silveus sank a three-pointer to put the Vikings up 3-1. At the 5:30 point in the first frame, the score was knotted at 5-5.But not for long. In the last five minutes of the first quarter, Valley went on a 12-4 run to build an 18-9 lead going into the second stanza.

SYRACUSE - Kem Zolman sat on the bench, watching his players cut down the basketball net while Katina and The Wave's "Walking On Sunshine" blared through speakers hanging in the gym.

Wawasee's varsity girls basketball team, led by freshmen and sophomores, beat Angola 45-39 in Saturday's Wawasee 3A Sectional championship.More than 2,000 fans watched the Warriors win their first sectional title since 1986. Early last week, Zolman thought his Warriors needed "divine intervention" to win the sectional. But here they were, and he may have been as surprised as anyone that the title came in 2000.

Tigers Cruise To Title

DUNLAP - For a brief moment in the fourth quarter of Saturday's Concord 4A Sectional championship, Goshen's girls basketball team was close to Warsaw. In reality, this was thanks to an inadvertent error by the scoreboard operator, as Warsaw cruised to its second sectional championship in three years, 75-42. The Tigers won their sectional games by an average of nearly 29 points. The 33-point win improves Warsaw's overall season record to 14-9; Goshen, a team the Tigers topped 71-43 in the regular season, ends its season at 5-17. Warsaw wasted no time in taking control of the game, jumping out to a 10-point lead with just over five minutes gone from the first-quarter clock.Warsaw led 17-7 after one quarter of play.
