- Congrats To Warsaw Tigers Congrats To Warsaw Tigers Editor, Times-Union: As the clock ran off the final seconds of the Tigers game at Huntington, my heart pounded and my mind raced back over the years of our son's football. This was the end of Dan's career in the Warsaw football program. He had started in Pee Wee and gone all the way to varsity starter in his senior year. Dan played in large part because a friend - John Miller - told us, "That boy could play any sport he wants to" when he was just 10 years old and in his first year of Little League.John sent his daughter across town on her bicycle that August with the Pee Wee registration forms for Dan and Jonathan. We hadn't intended to let the boys play football ("too dangerous").But John persuaded us.The boys loved it.

- Alone At Christmas - Thanks To Students - Enjoyed Film Festival Alone At Christmas Editor, Times-Union: Once more, Christmas has come and gone, but for those who are alone on that special holy day, it hardly seems like Christmas. It is particularly difficult for the elderly to be alone on Christmas and, to them, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are often just another evening and another day.Now when you're alone on Christmas and up in years, you have two choices. You can either sit around and feel sorry for yourself, or you can reminisce - that is, you can transport your mind back to the good old days when you were young and had your family around you.

Rochester Upends Valley In Plymouth Tourney Opener

PLYMOUTH - For the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings on Monday night, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. In the opening game of the Plymouth Holiday Tournament, Valley led Rochester by 14 points midway through the third quarter. However, when the final buzzer sounded, the Zebras had bounced back for a 66-65 victory. The key was free-throw shooting, and the Vikings couldn't do it when they had the opportunity to put away a young Rochester team.Valley made just 12 of 25 from the charity stripe, while Rochester knocked in 15 of 20.But even worse, it seemed that Valley's misses came at the wrong times. For instance, late in the second quarter, Scott Cooksey went to the line with a chance to give his team an 11-point lead going into halftime. However, he missed both free throws and the Vikings held just a 32-23 lead at the intermission.

Bruins Batter Tigers

MUNCIE - Unfortunately for Warsaw, No.4 Fort Wayne Northrop was not looking ahead. The only unranked team in the Delta Semistate, the Tigers were hoping the Bruins had their sights set on a championship game matchup with either No.2 Muncie Central or No.7 Delta. But it was no such luck.Fort Wayne Northrop entered the semistate semifinals with its focus squarely on the task at hand and duplicated its regular season domination of Warsaw with a 15-6, 15-8 win Saturday. "I was hoping they were taking us a little more lightly than they did," Warsaw coach Jamie Byron said."I can't say we played our best volleyball because we didn't.They were ready for us.They came out on fire." Northrop went onto win the semistate with a win over Delta in the championship match.

Warriors Continue March To Indy

LOWELL - On a night when a hobbled Jordan Swain was underused, it was the arm of Kory Lantz that gave Wawasee a 28-21 win over Lowell Friday and a date with Logansport in the northern 4A semistate. After a seesaw affair that saw the Warriors never trail, Lowell tied things up at 21-21 with 7:21 left in the third quarter. When quarterback Scott Schulz found fullback Jeff Clemens from 16 yards out on a bootleg, Clemens took the lion's share of offensive output for the Red Devils. The Warriors and head coach Joe Rietveld made 2000-yard rusher Toby Goetz public enemy No.1. "We knew where he was at all times," said Rietveld of Goetz."We had an extra guy where we thought he was going to be because he's a heck of a player." Undaunted by Lowell's tying score, the Warriors came back on the ensuing possession and showed why they were favorites to represent the north in Indianapolis over the weekend.

No. 5 Homestead Hands No. 8 Warsaw First Loss

Plain and simple, someone had to lose. In a battle of state-ranked and undefeated girls tennis teams, No.5 Homestead downed No.8 Warsaw 4-1 Monday afternoon in a lengthy match that was closer than the team score indicated. On an afternoon when forecasted rains never came, those who predicted a long, competitive match between the Spartans and the host Tigers were right on. "This was a great match, but we made too many errors," Warsaw coach Rick Orban said."Honestly, I think our girls were a little nervous. We started slow, we don't normally do that." The Tigers trailed early in the first set of all three matches, including the No.1 singles slot where Warsaw junior Jessica Davis fell behind 4-1 before making it 4-3.She trailed junior Laura Phillip 3-0 in the second set but fought back to a 5-4 deficit, eventually falling 7-5, 6-4 in straight sets.

IWU Takes Shorthanded Grace

WINONA LAKE - On paper, this game looked like a mismatch. Indiana Wesleyan came into the game with a record of 9-6 and 2-0 in the conference for a first-place tie in the Mid-Central Conference.Grace was 3-12 with an 0-2 conference record for a last-place tie in the MCC. It was a mismatch.Or was it? For 24 minutes, Indiana Wesleyan looked dominant, and for the other 16 minutes Grace College looked overpowering. In the end, the Wildcats held off the Lancers down the stretch for a 73-67 win Wednesday at Lancer Gym. This was a matchup of two of the youngest teams in the MCC.Grace starts one junior, three sophomores and a freshman, while two sophomores and a freshman come off the bench for the Lancers.Indiana Wesleyan started just one senior and has only three others on its 17 person roster.

Senate Hopeful Helmke Campaigns In Warsaw

If you tell Paul Helmke, Fort Wayne mayor and Republican candidate for the U.S.Senate, he's in a "David and Goliath" battle against Democrat Evan Bayh - he'll just smile. "David won," Helmke will respond. Touting the message of returning power to local governments, reducing taxes and maintaining a strong national security establishment, Helmke completed a 35-city tour of the state Friday at the Kosciusko County courthouse. "I'd like someone in Washington who understands what life is like at the local level," he said."We need to bring power back to the people.Put it back in the local level. "We also need to get rid of the excessive amount of taxes, that just doesn't make any sense," he added. Chief among those are eliminating the marriage penalty in the tax code and reducing or eliminating the capital gains tax. He'd also like to see a revamping of the Internal Revenue Service and the adoption of a flat tax, Helmke said.

Indiana Voters Asked Three Public Questions

Citizens will have three amendments to the state constitution to consider Tuesday when they exercise their right to vote. The questions appear on the sample ballot above. Appearing on the ballot as "Public Questions," the first of the amendments has caused the most contention. State Rep.Bill Ruppel is urging voters to mark "Public Question No.1" with a yes.Other organizations, like the Indiana Farm Bureau and Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute want, a no next to the question. "Here's what happens now," Ruppel said recently."We have to have property taxes in Indiana in the constitution. We're trying to remove that language from the constitution." The Indiana House of Representatives unanimously approved the proposal two years in a row. That's the only way amendments to the constitution can come before the public for a vote.
