7-Year-Old Hit By Mower Still 'Serious'

The 7-year-old injured Sunday in a tractor mower accident remains in serious condition today at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Ivan J.Sanchez, West CR 1200S, Silver Lake, had been playing in the yard when the accident occurred. According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department report, Ivan's father, Oscar Sanchez, said he was mowing around a pine tree with the tractor in the front yard, where Ivan had been playing.To get closer to the pine tree, Oscar backed the mower up, not seeing Ivan, who had been walking behind the mower, and ran over his son. Ivan's left leg and several toes on his right leg were cut off, according to the report.Oscar took his son into the home and called 911.Ivan then was airlifted to Parkview Hospital.

'Y' Celebrates Dekko Grant

Kosciusko Community YMCA held an appreciation luncheon for the Dekko Foundation at Stonehenge Golf Club to celebrate reaching a goal. One year ago when the YMCA began campaigning to raise funds for a warm water training pool, a new fitness center and a new youth gymnasium, the Dekko Foundation gave valuable counsel to the campaign leaders about fund raising.Dekko also backed the YMCA by giving $75,000 for the expansion project with a promise of another $75,000 once the YMCA campaign raised at least $1.35 million.This milestone was achieved last week. The Dekko Foundation is committed to supporting communities through schools, libraries and social service programs that strive to educate. The Kosciusko Community YMCA serves more than 4,800 members, providing health, fitness, recreation and other family-centered services to the residents of Kosciusko County.

Crash Injures Four

Four area residents were injured in a two-vehicle accident Saturday evening at the intersection of CRs 300N and 600E, near Warsaw. Debora Sparks, 41, of CR 450E, Leesburg, was driving on CR 600E when she turned east onto CR 300N.According to Indiana State Police reports, Sparks turned into the path of an eastbound car driven by Kevin Williamson, 19, CR 525E, Warsaw.Williamson's car struck the rear of Sparks' Blazer, causing it to overturn. Sparks was admitted to Kosciusko Community Hospital for back and neck injuries and was released Sunday.Her passenger, Tom Sparks, 44, Leesburg, was admitted to KCH and treated for similar injuries. Williamson was treated at KCH for knee pain and released.His passenger, Tabatha Neely, 18, CR 525E, Warsaw, was treated at KCH for neck and knee pain and released. Police said both vehicles were destroyed in the collision.

Police Continue Probe Of Fatal Syracuse Fire

Police are continuing their investigation into the Sunday fire in Syracuse that killed two young boys. Investigators were unavailable for comment today while they conduct interviews in the Syracuse area. They are also awaiting lab reports on materials taken from the house. Austin and Justin Reed, 3 and 17 months, were killed when the family home caught on fire Sunday morning.The cause of death has been ruled carbon monoxide poisoning due to smoke inhalation. David Reed, their father, woke up and smelled smoke.He ran across the street to his grandparents' house to call for help. The two boys were found in their bed and crib in a rear bedroom of the house.Reed was unable to go back into the house because of the heavy smoke. Police have termed the cause of the fire "suspicious," but are still searching for evidence.

Extension Homemaker Members Make 'Comfort Pillows' For Kids

Extension Homemaker Club members cut, sewed and stuffed "comfort pillows" Thursday in the Home and Family Arts Building on the fairgrounds for children under stress. The pillows, about 300, will be distributed to county fire departments and emergency medical services. "They're for kids who need them, if they've been in a fire, accident or are injured," said Diane Wagley, chairwoman of the sewing day project. She got the idea of mass producing the pillows from an Elkhart Extension project and decided the Kosciusko clubs might be interested in a similar project, too. Pillow panels came from Lowrey's Sewing Center, and Wal-Mart donated poly stuffing.The county clubs donated all the fabric backing and some poly stuffing, too. More than 30 women participated in the project.

Mason Health Care Celebrates National Nursing Home Week

National Nursing Home Week is May 13-17.As part of the celebration, Mason Health Care invited 3- and 4-year-olds from Head Start to participate in a balloon lift Tuesday.Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins spoke to the group of Mason residents and Head Start kids before everyone headed outside to let go of their balloons. Attached to each balloon was a Mason Health Care business card with a note on the back: "If found, please notify us."Since it was a very breezy day, the balloons could go quite far. After the balloon lift, the kids were treated to face painting and played a parachute game with the residents.Mason also gave each of the kids a "goodie bag." National Nursing Home Week was designated to honor all those who provide support, assistance and medical care to residents of nursing homes.

Three Injured In U.S. 30 Accident

Emergency workers cut away a car door trapping Michael J. Wisenberg, 30, of Warner Drive, Claypool, Monday afternoon after an accident at CR 800W and U.S. 30, near Atwood. Wisenberg, who was a passenger in a car driven by Mark B. Dickinson, 29, of West Market Street, Warsaw, was airlifted to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, with chest injuries. Dickinson was listed in fair condition this morning. According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department report, Dickinson was northbound on CR 800W when he apparently failed to yield from the median to a westbound pickup driven by Robert E. Miller, 47, Lakeville. Miller told police he was unable to avoid the collision and struck Dickinson's car in the passenger side. Dickinson and Miller complained of back pain and were taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital for treatment. Damage from the accident is estimated at $10,000 to $25,000. Lady Spartan Volleyball Sweeps IU-Northwest

Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning  and sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis  provided plenty of fireworks for Manchester University Monday. Chowning compiled nine kills and a .318 attack percentage. Tevis was just as strong in the middle with a .571 attack percentage (four kills, no errors and seven attempts), as the Spartans improved to 9-5 with a straight-set 25-12, 25-18, 25-13 sweep of Indiana University – Northwest.
