Manchester Mauls Hapless Rochester

NORTH MANCHESTER - The Manchester Squires outscored Rochester 15-4 in the first quarter and never looked back as they won 58-40. Six-foot-five forward Chris Enyeart scored 20 for the Squires, and guard Eric Swan added 12. The Squires led 27-14 at halftime. "Overall, our first half defense was not bad," Manchester coach Gary Goshert said."But we had a sluggish third quarter offensively and defensively.Enyeart had a good all-around game and played good defense for us." Manchester's junior varsity team improved to 3-0 with a 50-26 win. The varsity Zebras fell to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the TRC with the loss. Manchester, 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the TRC, hosts high-powered Homestead tonight.

Wildcats Win Norse

WABASH - The Whitko Wildcats bounced back from last week's 47-26 loss to Oak Hill to beat Northfield 14-0 Friday evening. Whitko rushed the ball 48 times for 263 yards.Halfback Bryan Rose scored the first Wildcat touchdown on a 57-yard run with 37 seconds left in the first quarter. Northfield finished with 109 yards on 36 carries. Fullback Keith Starkweather scored Whitko's second touchdown on a four-yard carry in the third quarter with 23 seconds left. Rose ended the game with 106 yards on 13 carries, while quarterback Jimmy Linn had 74 yards on 14 carries. Northfield is 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the TRC. Whitko, 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the TRC, hosts North Miami on Friday.

5-Year-Old's Death Accidental: Coroner

Preliminary findings in the autopsy Monday on the body of 5-year-old Michelle Baggs revealed that the child's death was accidental. Kosciusko County Coroner Larry Ladd said Tuesday that although the toxicology reports will not be available for about 10 days, he doesn't anticipate anything negative coming back. "At this point, there is nothing to lead us to believe that it's anything but accidental," Ladd said."It was purely an accidental hanging ...two children playing." The Etna Green girl was found Sunday morning hanging by a bathrobe belt from a play structure in a bedroom of her home, where she and a younger child were playing.

Crash Fatal To Manchester Man

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊA North Manchester man is dead and a Silver Lake man is injured following a Thursday evening accident on Packerton Road. Walter G.Grossnickle, 89, of 805 W.Thorn St., North Manchester, was pronounced dead at Kosciusko County Hospital by Kosciusko County Coroner John Sadler.Grossnickle suffered severe head injuries. Grossnickle was heading south on Packerton Road when he rear-ended a skid loader driven by James G.Lehman, 27, of 2350 E.CR 1200S, Silver Lake. Police did not find signs of braking at the scene of the crash. Lehman suffered head and back injuries and was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital where he was listed in fair condition. The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene of the crash and was assisted by the Silver Lake Police Department, Silver Lake Fire Department, Sidney Fire Department and Multi-Township EMS.

Warsawan Critical After Sunday Accident

ATWOOD -ÊA Warsaw man is in critical condition following a Sunday morning crash near Atwood. Around 7:20 a.m.Sunday, Carlos Cabrera, 24, of Warsaw, was traveling eastbound on Old Road 30 in a 1999 Black Toyota when he lost control in a curve near Atwood.Police believe Cabrera overcorrected in the curve, causing the car to leave the southern edge of the roadway and hit a utility pole and a tree. Cabrera was pinned in the vehicle when the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department arrived at the scene.Once extricated from the car, Cabrera was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital and later transferred to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne with back injuries. The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department was assisted by the Atwood Fire Department, Multi-Township EMS, Etna Green Fire Department and Etna Green First Responders.The accident remains under investigation.

Caston Clubs Triton

BOURBON - Caston pounded out 254 yards on 39 carries while holding Triton to a dismal 107 yards on 30 attempts en route to a 43-0 win at home. The Comets scored 20 points in the first quarter to blow things wide open and they never looked back as they out gained the Trojans in total offense 353-137.Triton punted the ball five times for an average of 22 yards per attempt. Triton (0-1) will host Northfield on Friday.

Crash Kills Silver Lake Man

MILLERSBURG - A Silver Lake man died this morning from injuries suffered in an accident on Ind.13 south of Millersburg. Edward E."Cookie" Cook, 72, of 11180 S.County Farm Road, Silver Lake, died at 5:11 a.m.at the scene of a three-vehicle accident. Cook was southbound on Ind.13 when his car struck the rear of a semi driven by Ivan J.Yoder, Millersburg.Yoder was backing the semi into a private drive with his trailer blocking the northbound lane, according to a police report. Police said Cook's car struck the semi without braking. A third driver, whose name was unavailable this morning, saw the collision and attempted to stop, but struck the rear of Cook's car. The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department investigated. Arrangements for Cook are pending at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary, North Manchester.

Free Trees

Pictured above is a scene from last year's Christmas tree giveaway at the Car Company on U.S. 30, east of Warsaw. Car Company owner Mike DeWitt said he gave away approximately 250 fresh-cut Christmas trees in three hours last year. This year's giveaway is even more generous. Tomorrow, at the Warsaw location and the new Car Company lot on U.S. 33, south of Goshen, DeWitt will give away 700 trees. Anyone in need of a free Christmas tree is invited to come and pick one up at either location between 1 and 4 p.m. "We just want to give something back to the communities that support us in our business," DeWitt said. "Last year, I was told by several people that they wouldn't have had a tree if we weren't giving them away for free." Photo Provided

Fire Damages Home On Packerton Road

A residence located at 1961 East 300 South, Warsaw, was heavily damaged by fire Friday. The home was occupied by Kris Tucker and her three children Kirk, Damion and Amber.They were not injured in the fire but a family dog was lost.The family escaped with only the clothes on their backs. Damage was estimated at $100,000.Warsaw Fire Inspector Mike Wilson said the home was insured. Wilson said the fire started in a clothes dryer and spread from the interior of the wall to the attic space.The call to the fire department was placed at 3:40 p.m.Firemen were on the scene until 7 p.m. Full assist was provided by the Winona Lake Fire Department and a call for a tanker assist was made to Claypool and Pierceton fire departments. Firefighters were hampered by wind and cold. The family was told to contact Combined Community Services and the American Red Cross for assistance.

Thursday Accident Closes Ind. 15S

Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union According to Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine, a pickup hauling a flatbed trailer was northbound on Ind.15, while a semi tractor/trailer loaded with tomatoes was southbound. The driver of the pickup, Jack G.Chipps, 47, of Mishawaka, reportedly crossed the center line while reaching for a dropped cigarette.The semi driver, Larry Thomas, 63, of North CR 350W, Warsaw, attempted to avoid the collision, but the two vehicles sideswiped. The impact sent both vehicles off the east side of the roadway, where Chipps' pickup flipped over.Thomas lost part of his load of tomatoes onto the highway before driving into a field. Chipps suffered back and shoulder injuries in the accident and was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital for treatment.Thomas was treated at the scene by Multi-Township Emergency Services personnel for an unspecified injury.

'Pot' Found In Blood Of Driver In Fatal Crash

The driver in a fatal traffic accident that occurred on Memorial Day tested positive for marijuana, according to police. Toxicology reports were received by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department today for Dexter Lee Anglin, 17, of Syracuse. Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine said information from the report will be forwarded to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor's Office for review and to determine whether charges will be filed. Anglin was the driver in a one-car accident in which all six occupants of the car were ejected.A back-seat passenger in the car, Tara Likens, 19, of North Webster, died May 27 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, as a result of the injuries she suffered in the May 26 accident. Police said the accident occurred when Anglin lost control of the car while driving at a high rate of speed and the car rolled over several times.

Man Drowns In Yellow Creek Lake

YELLOW CREEK LAKE - A Claypool man drowned Friday night while swimming in Yellow Creek Lake. Walter S.Hough, 29, Yellow View Lane, died about 7:30 p.m.after rescuers were unable to revive him. According to Floyd Knafel of the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, Hough was swimming away from shore when he ventured into water over his head and turned around. He tried to swim back to shallower water, but then went down. Knafel said other people were in the lake, but no one was in the immediate area where Hough was swimming.It took two to five minutes before anyone was able to get to where Hough went down, he said. A witness said Hough surfaced three times and called for help.He may have been in the water 20 minutes before he was found.

Cancer Fund-Raiser

A committee currently is working to organize the second annual Indiana University Cancer Research Classic. This year's event, a luncheon and 18-hole golf scramble, is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. June 25 at South Shore Golf Course, Syracuse. The event will include a raffle for donated prizes, including autographed sports memorabilia items from Purdue, Notre Dame and IU. Hole-in-one prizes will include a car from Petro's GM Showplace. Cost to enter is $100 per person and different levels of sponsorship are available. Last year the innaugural event raised $5,000, which was divided between IU and the local cancer society. Tight Squeeze

The Columbia Street viaduct in Warsaw was struck by a truck for the second time in one week. A Da-Lite Screen box truck hit the viaduct owned by the Norfolk-Southern Railroad this morning. The driver, David Lightfoot, was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital to be treated for facial lacerations. Lightfoot was driving south on Columbia Street when his 12-foot truck struck the 11-foot overpass. According to police, the truck was halfway underneath the viaduct before Lightfoot came to a complete stop. He was then able to back the truck, now 1 foot shorter, out of the viaduct. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. Last Wednesday morning, a DePuy truck driven by Philip E. Brett also struck the viaduct, causing up to $5,000 damage to the truck. Milford Man Hurt In Crash

A Milford man was injured Monday morning in a three-vehicle collision on U.S.6 at CR 9, near Nappanee. Jack E.Barthel Jr., 54, Camelot Trail, was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital for neck and back injuries and later released. According to Indiana State Police, a vehicle driven by Petra G.Beiring, 48, Millersburg, was westbound on U.S.6 and began to slow down for an eastbound school bus that was loading children.Barthel's car then slowed quickly and a westbound semi, driven by Christopher D.Poppele, 26, Waterloo, Iowa, attempted to stop, but was unable to. Poppele told police his semi jackknifed and struck Barthel's car in the rear end.The semi then hit Beiring's vehicle in the rear end with its drive axles. Beiring was treated at Bremen Hospital for neck pain and released.Poppele was uninjured. Damage for each vehicle was estimated at $2,500-$3,000.
