Vikings Come Alive In Fourth To Secure Homecoming Win

AKRON -ÊComing into Friday's Three Rivers Conference clash with Oak Hill, Tippecanoe Valley coach Scott Bibler didn't quite know how his football team would respond. For instance, this was homecoming week for the Vikings, and it turned out to be a very hectic, strange week for the Vikings. "It has been a frustrating week, probably our worst week of practice," Bibler said."We had so many activities interfere with our normal practice time, it was so crazy." After getting off to a shaky start, the Vikings pleased the home crowd and pulled out an important 26-6 TRC win against Oak Hill. "With homecoming, there is just so much hoopla,' Bibler said."We just weren't as focused as we usually are." Homecoming started out with a bang for the Vikings.

Manchester Girls Fall In Regional Thriller

BERNE - South Adams High School was the scene for the 2A South Adams Regional. The Manchester Squires took on the Taylor Titans in Saturday's second semifinal game. Taylor was ranked third in the state and Manchester seventh coming into the game. The Titans held off the Squires 42-41 to advance to the final game against Fort Wayne Harding. First quarter action started in a typical state playoff fashion, as both teams traded baskets to keep matters close. The Titans started with a full-court press to force the Squires into six early turnovers. With the score tied at 11-11 with 2:05 left in the first quarter, Manchester's Sarah Purdy was called for an offensive foul as she drove to the basket.Neither team scored until less than a minute left in the first. Taylor's Brianne Weeks hit a three-pointer to go up 14-11.Denae Beavers then stole a Squire pass and scored on a lay up as time ran out to complete a 5-0 run.The Titans led at the end of the period 16-11.

Valley Boys Win Sectional Championship

SOUTH WHITLEY - In those awful commercials for a certain credit card company, formerly funny David Spade denies customers in increasingly ridiculous ways. In the 3A sectional 23 final, No.5 (3A) Tippecanoe Valley found new ways to deny Peru points to the point of absurdity en route to a 55-39 at Whitko High School Saturday night. While Peru decided to make it a low-possession game and missed some close-range shots, Valley extended its defense out on the Tigers to keep Peru off the board for more than 10 minutes. After Valley's Michael Domenico opened the game with a three-pointer in the opening seconds of the contest, Peru seemed content to take the air out of the ball as the Tigers' Angelo King held the ball for over a minute near half court. The stall-ball technique worked as the first quarter produced just eight points.Unfortunately for the Peru faithful, the Vikings scored all eight points.

Moore Gives Liberals A Bad Name

Michael Moore, the "documentary" director from Michigan, is all in the news these days because of the his new movie "Farenhate 9/11." (Note to copy editor - That's not a typo.) Moore is an award-winning filmmaker. His "documentaries" (I thought documentaries were supposed to be non-fiction) have won Oscars, Emmys, Writers' Guild Awards and jury prizes at Cannes. He's sold more books than Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Coulter and Hannity combined, too, by the way.(Sometimes I think these people give conservatives a bad name.Like when Coulter called Ted Kennedy an "adulterous drunk.") But even some of my liberal friends say they have had enough of Michael Moore. Certainly there is nothing wrong with having opinions.Lots of people make a decent living doing just that. And there is nothing wrong with a liberal point of view.Certainly, liberals can make principled arguments against policies of the Bush administration.

Voluntary annexation of the lake area is expected in 2000, which will double the town's population. Wilbur Brake, Republican Wilbur Brake has served one term as a Silver Lake town councilman and said he had no idea, four years ago, how the town was controlled by state government and town ordinances.

- War - Don't Be Sheep - Dead Dog - Advent War Editor, Times-Union: Re: Leslie E.Swanson War isn't a spiritual battle.Spirits don't shoot bullets. It doesn't take much of a thinking cap to figure that out. Jesus should pat you on the head for reciting all those Bible verses.I'd do the same thing for my dog if he'd just deliver my house slippers. What matters to all you corporate harlots is all those foreign investment opportunities, which for obvious reasons always seem to be somewhere just beyond God's golden shore. Patriotism, leave it or leave it.Treason seems to be the reason for the season.Merry Christmas, girls.

Family Settles In Warsaw After Surviving Katrina

Choosing to change a lifestyle is one thing.Losing nearly everything and being forced to start over is a whole different story. For the last six weeks, the Perez, Soriano and Cabrera families, all closely related, drove 5,000 miles between six cities in hopes of evading the destruction of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. One mother and the families of her son and two daughters stuck together throughout the last month and a half, living through terrible traffic conditions and an ever-changing living situation. Seven days ago, the families finally arrived in Warsaw, where they plan to make a fresh start and put the memories of hurricane evacuations behind them.Their optimism is genuine, but the strained looks on their faces expose the recent bouts of insomnia, stress and horrific memories they experienced on the journey to their new home.

Chinworth Enlisted, Served As WAC Nurse

Jane McConnell Chinworth, 81, vividly recalls where she was and what she was doing when she heard about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. She, along with other nursing students, huddled around a radio as reports of the tragedy were broadcast.Japanese bombs sank or beached five battleships and destroyed 10 warships Dec.7, 1941, a Sunday morning.More than 2,400 Americans were killed during the attack from the East. The nation was stunned and outraged. Chinworth, then an unmarried student in South Bend, had completed her first six weeks of training. The Pearl Harbor weekend was the first she hadn't gone home to Warsaw.
