Warriors Win Sectional Opener

South Bend - An old Al McGuire axiom states the last five minutes of the first half and the first five minutes of the second half are the most important minutes of a ball game, basketball that is. No truer sentiment could have been concluded Saturday evening as the Wawasee Warriors doubled up the South Bend Washington Panthers 34-17, football that is. The 4A sectional win upped Wawasee's record to 4-6, while Washington ended the season 4-6. During the final five minutes of the first half, with Wawasee holding a 7-3 lead, the Warriors started a drive from their own 15-yard line.Wawasee used 10 plays, six runs and four passes, to go the 85 yards and the score, Doty to Bobby Likens from 11 yards out.On that drive, Warrior quarterback Brent Doty completed three passes to three different receivers and was helped by an interference call deep in Panther territory.

FTs Lift Manchester

MENTONE - With 21 seconds left, Manchester basketball coach Jody Shewman looked each of her players in the eye during a timeout. Each girl extended one arm into the middle of the huddle, like players always do before they break a huddle. "This," Shewman told her players, "is what we have waited a long time for." Manchester entered its Thursday game with Tippecanoe Valley with a 10-4 record. In those 10 wins, Manchester led pretty much all of the way through. This was different. To win this one, the Squires had to come from behind. The Squires chased Valley throughout the evening but caught up with two minutes left. They got a 46-45 lead, their first lead since the first quarter. They went on to win 52-49. "I told them at the timeout, If you believe it, you can get it," Shewman said."They came through for me." The win did two things for the Squires.

Tippecanoe Valley Boys Win Fifth Straight TRC Title

AKRON -ÊOn a night when individual Three Rivers Conference and sectional champions were recognized before the game, the Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball team gave its fans another reason to celebrate - their fifth straight TRC title. The 3A No.4 Vikings picked up an 83-63 win over rival North Miami to win this year's TRC crown with a 7-0 conference mark.Valley has won 13 of its last 14 TRC matchups, and Thursday night's conference win marks the ninth straight for the Vikings. "It was a good game for the fans to watch," said Viking skipper Bill Patrick, who is now 101-26 overall with a 36-6 mark in the TRC in six years at Valley."That 20-point difference is not indicative of the basketball played tonight.North Miami is a good team, one of the best we've played all year." While the Vikings picked up a 20-point win in the end, the Vikings did not sail to the victory.

Barrett Runs Roughshod Over Wildcats

NORTH MANCHESTER - There are many adjectives that can be used to describe Manchester running back David Barrett. Durable.Explosive.Powerful. Perhaps the best word to characterize Barrett is unstopable. Barrett carried the football 39 times Friday as he rumbled for an astounding 289 yards.Barrett totaled more yards than the entire Whitko team as his Squires rolled past their TRC rivals 35-14. On Manchester's first drive, Barrett carried the ball eight times for 73 yards and capped it off with a run from 10 yards out. Despite Barrett's heroics, Whitko wouldn't back down. The Wildcats quickly answered back, mounting a 10-play, 72- yard drive of their own.Because a sore knee limited Whitko leading rusher Josh Gonzalez to 10 carries, coach Bryan Sprunger needed a spark in the backfield. He found that spark in junior halfback Seth Slater.

Wildlife Rehabilitator Gives Animals A Second Chance

PIERCETON - Does routinely leave their fawns for 12 to 14 hours shortly after giving birth. The baby curls up where it is left until the mother returns. But sometimes deer abandon their babies or cannot get back to them. That's when animal rehabilitators like Launda Ewell come to the rescue. Her advice is to leave the animals alone. "The mother will not come back if you or your pets are in the area," she said from her secluded property off Ind.13."This little girl was born in someone's yard and left for three days. That's too long. The mother would have come back long before then, if she was going to." The 10-day-old fawn she indicated lay quiet and alert in a human baby crib in Ewell's nursery.Another fawn lay nearby, motionless. The second baby had a gaping neck wound caused by an unfortunate encounter with a fence.
